Re: Forum downtime
Well glad to hear that someone who understands that is on the job.bahua wrote: It's not a bandwidth issue. They could pipe an OC192 gigacock line to our server, and it wouldn't make a lick of difference.
This forum is one of countless other database instances on its server. All these instances, using a relatively lightweight database like mySQL, share access to the system's memory and processor. When there ain't no more, there ain't no more.
The problem is compounded by a couple of factors. One is that the SMF/PHP/MySQL trifecta is a bit of a programming disaster anyway, so it's usually just a matter of time before a shitload of dead data, for lack of an easy word to describe it, clogs the server. This effect is accelerated by the fact that KCS has heavier use than most accounts.
In short, KCS is too big for its space on the web.

It's time for a dedicated server! I know KCP doesn't like the idea, but I'm sure we could raise the $$$ to pay for it easily.

Re: Forum downtime
There is absolutely no reason this site needs a dedicated server. I've got a ticket in with dreamhost...problem is I have to know when it's happening and I'm just not on here enough. I'll pass the info onto bahua.lock+load wrote: It's time for a dedicated server! I know KCP doesn't like the idea, but I'm sure we could raise the $$$ to pay for it easily.

That'd be awesome, but it's way beyond our needs.lock+load wrote: It's time for a dedicated server! I know KCP doesn't like the idea, but I'm sure we could raise the $$$ to pay for it easily.

Are people still experiencing issues? The provider has moved some of our infrastructure. If so, if you could give me times and the error you see in your browser.

Re: Forum downtime
I no longer have the problem with making a post and having an error message indicating that I've already posted. The forum is a bit slow for me at times still, I'll keep a record and let you know.KCPowercat wrote: Are people still experiencing issues? The provider has moved some of our infrastructure. Re: Forum downtime
It's still pretty slow for me, peppered with 500 errors.
Re: Forum downtime
It's much improved, although there are occasional 500 errors. A refresh generally works.

Re: Forum downtime
I still encounter that problem, though not as often as a month ago. I also still occasionally encounter the problem of typing a reply and then having it take a minute or more to post -- or not post at all.Highlander wrote: I no longer have the problem with making a post and having an error message indicating that I've already posted.
Re: Forum downtime
I've been seeing this message a lot in the last two days...

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Re: Forum downtime
That's a 500 error. That means that the code that's running the website encountered an error. In the case of this website, that error is almost undoubtedly database connection problems. That means that it's able to connect to the database, but not for all the times it needs, to load the page. The number of queries(and connections) the forum software makes to the database is displayed at the bottom of every successfully loaded forum page. This page, for example, says, "Page created in 0.564 seconds with 12 queries." Your 500 error, if it was making 12 queries(it does vary), probably only made 10 or 11 of them, due to some intermittent connection problem on the host's side.
You can usually work through these by just reloading the page(F5).

Re: Forum downtime
^ Refresh does usually work, but I seem to be receiving these messages about 50% of the time still today.

We're working on it.
