On Kansas City Week in Review (KCPT), one of the reason's provided why Kansas City was still in the running for the GOP Convention, and has a chance at all, is that it is the only city among the finalists that has its' arena unbooked for the period of time needed for the pre-setup and convention period.

Chatted with someone somewhat in the loop (works for City close to Mayor's office) who was also saying this could be major plus for KC. Am paraphrasing here but this is the gist of what I got... Other advantages he said touted to RNC - arena, PAC, P&L, Convention Center and extra theatres/halls if needed are all within few blocks walking distance to each other, closer than other candidate cities for the most part. And streetcar or not by then, in addition to private busses they can run extra MAX buses (every 5min?) from Plaza to downtown [perhaps at the expense of Troost line getting lighter service?]. Another advantage discussed is that a commuter airport is right next to downtown for the VIPs to fly into.FangKC wrote:On Kansas City Week in Review (KCPT), one of the reason's provided why Kansas City was still in the running for the GOP Convention, and has a chance at all, is that it is the only city among the finalists that has its' arena unbooked for the period of time needed for the pre-setup and convention period.
The biggest downside is not as many downtown hotel rooms within walking distance but KC does have a lot in metro for its size, over 30K rooms.
One of the biz journal articles quotes the RNC saying selection is not about politics, which could put Cleveland out of running if swing state status is their major benefit. If RNC wants $50M committed before selection by Fall rather than before convention, KC chances might be hurt - but if space clearly isn't available in the other cities to meet schedule... maybe KC shouldn't worry about meeting the $ amount. Though as a non-GOP, would rather see regional GOP'rs blow their money on this convention than on GOP agendas.

The DNC has announced its "5 cities" list. They are:
Cleveland, Ohio
Columbus, Ohio
New York, New York
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Phoenix, Arizona
Perhaps the 2 Ohio cities will help the RNC rule out Cleveland. I'm not sure what the benefit would be to having the RNC choose Denver, so that would Dallas and Kansas City. I still suspect Dallas has the best chance of hosting.

One piece mentioned Dallas could have problems with the June date the RNC prefers.AllThingsKC wrote:The DNC has announced its "5 cities" list. They are:

I don't know that the RNC wants their convention in a place as big as Jerryworld.
The Mavericks owner has already said he will not change the venue for this team to accommodate the RNC.

Isn't Reunion Arena (Mavs old arena) still open? IIRC, the Big 12 had their women's tourney there when Dallas hosted.

One of the things to consider is that there are ways around the schedule conflicts, especially if the user really wants the facility.

Re: KC invited to bid for GOP National Convention
At first I didn't think KC had a chance but it's starting to look like it does based on circumstances that fit this type of convention - and dates. Let's hope local GOPrs blow their money on this instead of MO/KS dark ages GOP agenda.pash wrote:It really doesn't matter. If there's a scheduling conflict in one of these cities' arenas, it's because the local basketball or hockey team is hosting a playoff game there. They're not going to vacate so the Republicans can get set up.
It does look like KC's big advantage is a June convention. If the Republicans want to get going early, it's the only city that can guarantee there won't be any conflicts.
I wanted to be there but couldn't make it...

Re: KC invited to bid for GOP National Convention
The advantage KC has is that the arena is available for that period of time for the setup and the convention. The setup and convention period requires a block of six weeks --mostly for preparation. That might exclude arenas in the other three cities that have concerts, sports events, or conventions already scheduled. The fact that the convention requires such a long block of time pre-convention might be what causes them to choose Kansas City. It's one thing to reschedule a few events during one week, but quite another to reschedule a lot of events over six weeks.
Re: KC invited to bid for GOP National Convention
Another perfect example of why not to get rid of Kemper Arena. Agree?

Yes...Denver has "a little edge". That's why I posted the link.

Any thoughts on how Kemper Arena plays into this? Could it be used for some events?
