Committee votes to recommend renaming KCI after MLK
Kansas City’s MLK advisory committee voted Sunday to make a recommendation to rename Kansas City International Airport after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

...

That recommendation will now go back to city council members who can vote on a change, or put the vote on a public ballot.

And there is a third option, a community group or the SCLC could petition for a name change on the November ballot.

Can I nominate Madison, SW Trafficway, and Belleview for this honor...maybe I can hate it a little less.

It does have an intersection of three roads... Maybe we could redo all of these streets as part of the renaming. Renaming them as is would feel like kind of an insult.

Still, none of those streets goes to the east side. Maybe 63rd, prospect, and summit? they don't all intersect at once, but they go around the whole city. And I don't think any are historic names.

I still don't get why they didn't pick a street named after an actual slave holder.

Kansas City's Martin Luther King JR committee makes formal terminal recommendation
The chairman of a city committee tasked with making a recommendation on what to name after civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., said the committee is sticking with its recommendations.

Roger Williams, who chaired the committee, made the presentation Thursday during the City Council's business session.

Last month, the committee presented its final report to Kansas City Mayor Sly James. That report recommended naming the new terminal at Kansas City International Airport after King.

A second recommendation was to rename 63rd Street to honor King.

No. Why would you combine a memorial to WWI war dead with a civil rights leader that was killed 50 years later? Doesn't compute.

The point is that many of these other suggestions are nearly as ridiculous.

If only the leaders cared enough to recognize a local civil rights leader.

He founded a local branch of the civil rights group MLK was the first leader of, the SCLC, so without a doubt yes.

But he rose to prominence in politics which muddies if it would have been named after him otherwise.

New idea:

name each streetcar for an iconic person and wrap it in some fancy graphics. 801=MLK, 802= a president, 803= a scientist, etc.

Still going with Nichols Rd through Plaza. Has an appropriate if maybe even meaningful irony.

^ How about just rename Cleaver II? Not sure he deserved a street in the first place.

That would be hilarious considering he is the one pushing to rename paseo.

I want a Tom Pendergast streetcar. MLK, Truman, Pendergast.

Half-naming The Paseo for Martin Luther King Jr. is a wholly lousy idea
The Kansas City Council on Thursday considered a proposal that would sorta rename The Paseo for Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. on the Paseo, it would be called. The council made no decision on this matter.
