http://abcnews.go.com/Travel/skip-kansa ... d=28944448My family’s cross-country drive was a chance to visit some of America’s great cities for the first time, and, as we made overnight stops along Interstate-70, we fell in love with Kansas City. This is a fun, exciting town, with a burgeoning culinary scene, cultural diversity and a bevy of family-friendly activities, many of them free to visitors. Here are a just a few neat things to do in the City of Fountains.

Ranker.com peoples like KC apparently. The samples aren't very high but KC hits high on a lot of lists.. including #1 for best cities for artists, musicians and most under-rated city. Either the site has mostly KC voters or KC's image is improving. Probably a bit of both.

Kansas City ranks No. 12 on Travel and leisure's list of cities with best music scenes. We beat out several much larger cities including: Denver, Miami, Boston, Philadelphia, Detroit, Dallas, San Francisco, Seattle, and Atlanta.

Re: Rankings, lists, and such
Wow, Kansas City is doing so much better on STEM growth than St. Louis. It will be interesting to see if KC's ranking changes much after Cerner finishes it's Three Trails campus, and hires all those additional thousands of workers there.
I think the Metro would be doing a lot better though if we had a major research / tech-based university in the metro area--like an MIT, Cal-Tech, Stanford-type university. It remains one of Kansas City's biggest weaknesses. Kansas City really doesn't have a destination university that people fight to get into, and that draws people here from all over the world. We need that. If the wealthy people in this metro really want to leave a lasting impact, this is where they should be focusing their legacy giving. They need to be going after the top faculty and researchers, and funding chairs, and endowments.
I think we do alright on the medical front education-wise, with UMKC Medical School, KU Medical School, and Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. Kansas City graduates a lot of physicians for a metro of our size. KCUMB I think is the biggest school of medicine in Missouri based on enrollment, and in the top 10 nationally on that measure. When its' expansion is complete here, as well as in Joplin, KCUMB could well be in the top three of the largest medical schools in the USA based on enrollment.
I know I sound like a broken record on this issue, but we have a perfect location to start building this type of higher education nexus in the Paseo West neighborhood. It's near downtown, KCUMB, and the Hospital Hill institutions. It would be fairly easy to convert his mostly industrial-zoned area into a research/education node.

Glassdoor, an employment services company, ranks Kansas City No. 2 as best city for jobs in the USA.
The company's rankings are determined by weighting three factors equally: how easy it is to get a job (hiring opportunity), how affordable it is to live there (cost of living), and how satisfied employees are working there (job satisfaction).

Job seekers are also being pulled towards cities like Kansas City and Louisville that boast a stable middle-class and affordable, family-friendly neighborhoods, Chamberlain says. "While these cities may not have scorching tech job growth, they make up for it with low housing costs compared to paychecks and affordable middle-class neighborhoods," he adds.
Many cities on this list offer great economic value for job seekers but are facing a roadblock with branding," says Chamberlain. Part of that is the lack of a fat paycheck that would be standard in bigger metros. But Chamberlain says even though salaries are lower, that’s countered by affordable housing options and vibrant job markets in which people can get hired, then advance their careers.
Says Chamberlain: "A key takeaway for job seekers is that a bigger city doesn’t always mean better when it comes to finding a job, being satisfied in that job, and affording a mortgage.

KC has had the jobs openings but the hard part last few years has been filling them - although just recently KC is now showing employment growth above US avg.FangKC wrote:Glassdoor, an employment services company, ranks Kansas City No. 2 as best city for jobs in the USA.
