Help needed: Annexation history of KC

Post by WoodDraw »

I know we have some KC historians here, so I have a question for you:

Is there a resource to see the annexation history of the KC metro area?  Or am I going to have to go sit in a library for awhile?

Thanks for making my life easier,

It's going to be difficult.  I don't think there's anything online to make it easy. I would suggest going to the Missouri Valley Room, and see if they have any folder on annexation.
There is no fifth destination.

I've seen this print in men's bathroom at Cafe al Dente. I know your laughing(I am), but, while your there get the grey cup pizza and talk to Leonard he can tell you where he got a copy and maybe some other information. Then if the photographer rolls in, Ed I think his name is, he does a lot photography an history videos (seen in Nat Geo and History Channel) he could probably point you to some other resources.

Point being some of these informal resources (like here) can help you uncover some good info.

When I move to Pendleton Heights, I learned (anecdotal) it was the first platted neighborhood of Kansas City, maybe part of the first annexation? Maybe your research will verify this? Good luck!

Are you interested in the why behind annexation or a history by date of all additions to the city?

I have a big color-coded map in my office that shows the annexation history of Kansas City from 1853 through 1998.  I'd be happy to make that available.

Very good.  Better than mine as it includes Brooke Hills.

Thanks a lot everyone - big help.  Especially dangerboy - great links.  DaveKCMO, too.  I'll have to try to find that book.

Both.  I got pitched a story based on the recent annexation controversy, so I've been doing some research to see if I can come up with anything.

At the very least, I've had fun researching and reading.  Amazing what you learn when you delve into the history of your city.

I know it's an old thread that got bumped but the parcel viewer has a layer for annexations and detachments (KC traded some land with Gladstone and NKC that I know of). You can zoom in and see exactly where they have been at down to the address level

It's under "layers"
http://maps.kcmo.org/apps/parcelviewer/

The most recent boundary change was 2014 when the border with Gladstone shifted in two places
