Looks like Acadmie Lafeyette has purchased the Derrick Thomas Acadmey. Not sure if this will be for a new high school or just expansion for its current classes.

It looks like it will be for a high school. They are hoping to open in 2018. The same year, they are also hoping to expand the kindergarten class from 120 to 200. It's unclear how that will be done, but I'm guessing that perhaps the 7th and 8th grades could move to the Derrick Thomas site as well, freeing up more room in the other schools:

There is now an Acadamie Lafayette Coming Soon sign at the old Derrick Thomas Academy and it looks like work is in full swing. I'm not sure if they are still on track for opening this fall, but I hope so.

You can see the population trends in the district. They pulled all of the crossroads out of the rest of downtown.

This should be closely mirrored in council redistricting in 2021.

The populations and ethnicity %s that they show, is that the numbers of students going to a district school or the number of school age children regardless of where they go?

It appears to me they did the opposite of what you said. They consolidated crossroads with downtown, westside, and northeast.

It looks like the number listed is the total population and demographic breakdown of each sub-district.

Well, I read that map backwards

Has to be populations of school age children at around 200k. If all children and not just breakdown of those enrolled in KCMSD, I’m surprised at the 40% black population. It shows how segregated we still are and how much I probably need to expand where I go in the city. I would have thought we were predominantly white, but that only shows 40%. Time to diversify some more.

The map is only the kcmo school district which is itself only a portion of the city south of the river. So 200k is about right for the total population of the area. Kcmo school district has only 15k students. There are another 15k or so children in charter/private schools.

This is just those in a district school. Doesn’t include those in charters or private.

Article on Lincoln Prep and it's changing demographics from this weekend.


As the demographics of Kansas City continue to morph, so do the demographics of the city’s most historic black high school. Blacks are leaving Kansas City’s core for the suburbs and elsewhere, while white and Hispanic communities are increasingly moving into the city. The same circular movement, district data shows, is happening at Lincoln.

If enrollment trends continue, by fall 2019, black students will no longer be Lincoln’s largest demographic. Those same trends suggest, in fact, that by 2023, black students will be among the school’s minority population behind Hispanic and white students.

It is as if nothing will ever be good enough for the KC Star.

The dynamic over whose school Lincoln is insanely complicated and goes back to the beginning of the college prep program in 86/87. How the district and the new school board react to this news will have all kinds of ramifications about other district decisions. You can see in the article how it already puts Bedell on the defensive.
