For moving from KCMO metro to Seattle metro - I think that would be an adjustment up... right? Or am I misreading this?

As the $26.5 billion merger of Sprint Corp. and T-Mobile US Inc. labors toward a possible conclusion, it’s picked up new opponents: five U.S. senators and California’s Public Advocates Office.

The senators, all Democrats, sent a letter to the Senate Commerce Committee asking it to study the deal’s possible effects on consumer choice and wireless competition, FierceWireless reports. They point to the potential danger of “combining these two disruptors into one mega-company.”

The companies have selected Sprint’s (NYSE: S) Overland Park headquarters as the first of the five new locations, and it will be "a new addition" to the existing campus, the companies said in a Wednesday release. It's unclear whether the center would be new construction or fill an existing building.

The Overland Park campus previously was announced as secondary headquarters for "New T-Mobile" and would house a variety of business support functions and teams. The primary headquarters post-merger would be in Bellevue, Wash., where T-Mobile (Nasdaq: TMUS) is based.

Sprint Corp. CEO Michel Combes sent a disquieting letter to Federal Communications Commission member Geoffrey Starks on Tuesday painting a dark picture for the financial future of the Overland Park-based carrier without its knight in shining armor, T-Mobile US Inc.

“Without the merger, the trajectory for Sprint will worsen and Sprint’s prospects will be limited,” Combes wrote in the letter. "Sprint will be forced to further reduce its operating expenses, which means more job reductions in Kansas City and throughout the company, and our future as a stand-alone company will be in jeopardy."

Combes looks back to 2010, when the wireless carrier had more than 43,000 employees. Sprint (NYSE: S) now has about 28,000, with many of those reductions affecting employees at the Overland Park headquarters.

"Sprint's future affects not just Sprint's employees but the entire Kansas City community," Combes wrote.

He details Sprint's painful cost cutting, rounds of layoffs, constant restructuring and absence of profit. Sprint is nearly $40 billion in debt and has a $2.8 billion negative cash flow.

The sale includes a sale-leaseback agreement with Sprint, which would continue to occupy a portion of the campus. As part of that deal, Sprint plans to consolidate its operations from 11 buildings to four. It's unclear what Occidental has planned for the rest of the space.
