Re: Who's got a motorcycle?

I bought my '82 standard this year on february 29th. Around the end of march me and some friends set out from kansas city, north up 169 hiway. This would be my first distance ride on my new 26 year old goldwing. We were supposed to end up at a restaurant on the missouri river in nebraska. One of my friends that suggested the ride told me the way and I looked it up on mapquest and got a route semi-planned. We set out to meet in smithville, a little place north of k.c. before I left my house I called everyone to make sure they were going to make it and it turns out that my buddy who had suggested the route had something come up and couldn't make it. I meet my other 2 friends in smithville and off we go. I sort of memorized the map and we just followed 169 up. It was a beautiful sunny day and even though it started out a little cool, it started warming up kinda. We kept going and going up and every time we stopped for gas I would be asked if we were going the right way. I said yes. In my mind, I had gotten stuck on the fact that we would just follow the hiway and we would be there. Next thing we know we are in iowa and not heading to nebraska. Great riding though. Up there somewhere we came across a whole bunch of giant windmills sitting in a cornfield next to the hiway. Would of made a great picture, but we just rode on. We finally came to a "T" intersection. Go left or right. We were needing to gas up and the sign said "Mount Ayr 2 miles" so we went right. We roll into the only gas station in the little bitty town and gassed up. We go inside to pay and ask if there is any place to eat around here. The girl behind the counter told us we could either hit the subway down the street or there was a restaurant in the square. We didn't come all this way to eat at subway, so we figured option #2 couldn't be any worse so we head to the square a couple of blocks away. We ride around the square looking for this place and then we see some cars parked on the other side of the square. It's the place we were looking for. We parked across the street and look up at the place in question and see "Peggy Sue's" in neon above the front door. We walk in to a 50's diner in iowa. It's full of folks who had just come from church and are having their after services meal. The place is packed (it wasn't real big)and we wait about ten minutes to sit down. It's the kind of place in that kind of town where they have framed pictures of all the graduating classes at the local high school going back to the 30's. The food was awesome. I had a huge juicy cheeseburger with sweet potato fries. the fries come with powdered sugar to dip them in. WOW, just awesome. I've had sweet potato fries before, but never with powdered sugar. Yum. We pay and ask how to get to I-35 and how far it is. Were told to just head east and it's just a few miles. We ride the hiway, which is in great condition with no traffic and beautiful winding ribbons of hills and asphalt. I-35 was in reality more than 20 miles away. Oh well. It was a lot of fun rolling up and down the hiway with nothing but sky and rolling farmland in front of us.

We get on 35 south and then hit missouri 69 that takes us through a bunch of small towns and lonely gas stops. By the time I got home I was dead tired, but very happy. We had started out at 9am heading to nebraska and ending up at a great little town in iowa for some great grub and at the same time I got a little seat time and we had put in over 350 miles. My 1100 didn't miss a beat.

It all goes to show you that......

Sometimes it's nice to end up somewhere you didn't expect or plan for.

Had a Honda Shadow up until about a year ago...sold it because I never had the opportunity between work, my daughter and trying to find some free time to write.  Would like to get a bike again, I love riding, but don't see it as being a viable option until a couple more years have gone by. :(

I just bought a suzuki this spring, put about $1200 into it to get it road ready. One 200 mile trip and then it sat. Having a one year old makes me forgot I need to keep it running to keep those carbs from gumming up. Sure I reversed all the money spent by letting it sit.

Anyways, thanks Beermo, for making me crave a good long ride that I can't have...Maybe next summer...if I'm not spending to much time working on the house I bought to have a garage for the motorcycle...

good luck with the riding. i got my bike tucked into my little bitty garage along with my riding mower and my fullsize pickup. i plan on riding at least one day a month until spring. hopefully i will trade mine back to the guy i bought it from and snag his ST1100 for it.

also you should probably throw some seafoam in your tank and run it a little if you're not going to ride it at all. seafoam wouldn't hurt anyway, even if you're gonna ride.

here's a trip report from a south african guy and his friends on their trip in angola. it's fairly short and to the point with lots of pics. he added a link at the bottom of each page that goes to his next post so you don't have to wade thru all the "cool trip" posts by other members.

You have to watch everything around you like a hawk when you're out riding.

Thankfully it's very easy to see the inattentive drivers. Hopefully when you ride you pay attention to what's going on around you.

It's amazing how many folks get in their cages and act like they're sitting at home on their couch. Actually it's unbelievable, but true.

I did 120 miles last Saturday with a friend through Parkville, Leavenworth and around through Atchison and so on. The sky was so wide open with beautiful cirrus clouds on the back highway from Leavenworth to Atchison that I caught myself spacing off more than once while doing 75mph.

It was a great first decent ride this year and it was a good reminder to me to try and stay focused on the number one goal, which is to stay on 2 wheels and not get too lost in the beautiful vistas in front of me.

Rode up to Leavenworth with a friend to eat some BBQ today.

It was hot.

There were also a lot of bikes out and I think there may have been something big going on at Worth's new store on I-29. On the way back through Platte City we ran into at least a hundred riders going south to north on that outer road where the first light is across the road from Mickey D's.

It was a nice ride. We met up in Parkville and rode west out of town and rode through Waldron straight into the closed road just north of the burg. The bridge there is closed on what I think is the 92 spur, I'm not quite sure. We turned around and went east up and down through the rural roads until we got around it and went some more until we rode across the blue bridge into Leavenworth.

There's only one place to get BBQ in Leavenworth and it's at this trailer parked next to a huge smoker in a parking lot on 4th St. in the downtown area. I think it's at 4th and Miami. We loaded up our food and rode down to the park that's just down by the river to find some shade and sit down.

The BBQ was excellent. Very tender with a nice smoky taste. Had a lot of sauce on it though. Tasted sweet and was thick, sort of like K.C. Masterpiece. We wiped most of it off of our food. We both agreed it was more than too much. If you go, tell them to hold the sauce.

Here's a pic I took down at the park while my buddy was talking business after we ate.

I hope to see some ride reports from the rest of youse very soon.

Rode up to Excelsior Springs to Ventana Grill, featured recently on KCPT's "Check Please".
Nice ride despite the breeze. COuple of great sammiches, couple of beers and we're out the door for under $30 bucks. Piano player was great, old standards and newer stuff too.
My advice: grab a couch seat and a cold beer if yer ridin!
Home safe - No real idiot cagers even worthy of the flown bird - unusual.

Ride safe poster-bikers, cager-texting idiots are out for paint!

Sounds good.

What route did you take up there.

Looks like we might be doing some short rides that run about 2-3 hours at the most as many weekends as possible, with an occasional long ride here and there.

I'm looking to find us some places we haven't been or roads we haven't rode on and Excelsior and other points in that direction are a direction we haven't done.

Got any good ideas for rides up that way. This one here sounds good, what else do you have.

Btw, WTF is a "poster biker". First time I've heard that term used. I can only guess.
