Candidates and voters alike have cited Kansas City’s infrastructure and services as one of the prominent issues of this year’s mayoral election.
Today Steve Kraske talks with Dr. Robyne Turner, Schutte/Missouri Professor of Urban Affairs and Director of the Cookingham Institute of Urban Affairs at UMKC about the responsibility of cities for providing basic services and infrastructure – roads, water, sewers, policing, trash collection, and more.
We’ll also talk with Kansas City Mayor Kay Barnes about her plans to support $54 million this year to repair streets, bridges, and other areas of deferred maintenance. The city has been criticized for not spending enough on such items while devoting too much to new projects.
Finally, KCUR’s Maria Carter discusses what candidates for mayor are saying about deferred maintenance and city infrastructure.
