Re: Urban Gardening and Landscaping

One of the things that we use is a drip irrigation system. Relatively inexpensive, easy to use and assures not using more water than needed plus you don't have to be a slave to the garden hose. You can get a beginner set for around $20 or so and add to it as needed. Ours waters our whole garden, our...

Re: What Will Save the Suburbs?

Just for the sake of a bit of drivel-why would anyone care if the 'burbs die? If no one wants to live there, let 'em go??

Re: Urban Gardening and Landscaping

I have oregano and thyme planted in the ground by my west-facing full sun front door, and both are still alive and kicking.  I've had varieties of sage that overwintered as well.  As far as I can tell, I would have to take round-up to them to kill them, and I'm not sure that would even do it.  All ...

Re: Urban Gardening and Landscaping

I like this thread a lot. We were just talking about how we want to turn part of our lawn into a garden. Good advice on the tomatoes nota. What kind of tips would you suggest for someone just getting into gardening? We'd like to do tomatoes and squash and herbs this spring. If you are just getting ...

Re: Urban Gardening and Landscaping

A few gardening thoughts. Look for grape tomatoes rather than cherry tomatoes. They bear just as profusely, just a bit bigger fruit. My grandkids and the neighbor kids eat them right off the vine like candy. Last year, I actually canned a few quarts of grape tomatoes. They are just as good now as fr...

Re: Neighborhood Security ?

Lots of things to think about with the CCW-lots of responsibilities, like-do you think you could look at another human (or any other living thing) and shoot to kill? Keep in mind that in this situation - and actually in any armed situation, you shoot to kill. Keep in mind that that criminal pointing...

Re: The Health Care Debate

I didn't see anything about this in this thread, maybe I missed it, but is this the kind of care we want in the US? Keep in mind that this week Bill Clinton had a heart problem and was in the hospital, treated and out again in less than 24 hours. We may have huge healthcare problems, but at least w...

Light Rail

it's interesting- Indianapolis is trying for a grandiose transit plan which includes a lot of light rail. I think I heard finished in 2015 but I might be mistaken. If they can get this off the ground, there will be a referendum. Should be interesting to watch. Many of the "big guns" of gov...

Re: Mormon Temple Announced for Shoal Creek Valley

Not unlike the STL Temple. You can see that golden Angel Moroni for miles. Beautiful. If they have an open house for the public, be sure to go if you're at all interested. It's interesting to learn about the beliefs of others. We went to the one in STL when it opened-it was beautiful inside and out....

Re: Neighborhood Security ?

two thoughts: "neighborhood watch" signs say nothing more than "this is a neighborhood with a few residents who cared enough to make the effort to have neighborhood watch signs installed on the block."  i imagine that the idea is that the signs will tell would-be criminals that ...

Re: Neighborhood Security ?

What exactly is a neighborhood watch in practice and how it is distinguished from any normal, reasonable neighborhood where people are paying attention? Do you put people on duty, organize patrols or otherwise formalize the way you are going to monitor the neighborhood? To me, a sign that says &quo...

Re: Neighborhood Security ?

Long ago, we in the 'burbs realized that policing our neighborhood was everyone's job and that the police couldn't be everywhere at all times.

Neighborhood Watch is a really great organization if you get it going.

Re: kansas city sucks.

Wonderful time-we were at Turtle Bay for a couple days (our favorite) on the North Shore (most of the time we stayed with old friends)-they have a sheltered beach where we could swim, snorkel, etc. We also swam at Haliewa (sp?) and Hanauma Bay all of which were sheltered. Surf on the ocean was 25 to...

See you there - we leave first thing in the morning.  So, how was it? We're leaving for home tonight-been here since the 10th. We've had a wonderful time for sure. It's 40 in Indy today, will be 30 for the high when we land and for the next 6 days will be even colder. Leaving sunshine, 80 degrees. ...

Thanks!!! After I read that a couple of times, I think I get it. I have a tripod with me. Just don't have any more rainbows at this time  :?

Supposed to be some more rain tomorrow. Will try again. Thanks again.

Photo question

Why is it that every picture of a rainbow I've ever tried to take is less than the actual sight? I'm here in Honolulu and saw a beautiful bright huge rainbow from the top of my friends' mountain down to the ocean and the pictures I took are all washed out. Crisp of the scenery around it but the rain...

Quote from: nota on January 08, 2010, 02:07:21 PM That's a stereotype or assumption that may be something you do, but I'd really really question the accuracy of this at least in the circles I travel in. Just a simple difference of opinion and a simple comparison of 2 different lifestyles. I'm sorry ...

Re: What would you do?

Call the cops with license plate and description. Speak to manager and hostes (bartender too??) in a not so quiet voice regarding feeding this guy so much booze and then letting him go out to drive. Watch the papers the next day for an incident or accident report. Probably shouldn't return to that r...
