Re: Urban Gardening and Landscaping

Heather, I have an oregano plant in my backyard, that has survived winter very well, and is very pretty. Blackberry/blueberry/raspberry bushes would be a good idea since they look like shrubs. I'll give it a shot.

Re: Urban Gardening and Landscaping

Yay! It's almost spring. We're planning on putting in an orchard in the backyard this year, using the backyard orchard culture technique (put 3-4 trees in the space of one and keep them aggressively pruned and no more than 8-10 feet tall, also planting succcessive ripening varieties). The plan is cu...

Re: Plaza riot?

I don't think this particular issue had anything to do with disenfranchisement of black youth.   Frankly, a bunch of kids used social media to say, "hey, let's all go down to the plaza and mill about and see if we can get in on the action that is taking place in other cities".  Philly, som...

Re: Plaza riot?

People say its because there isn't enough for kids to do...but isn't this a relatively new problem?  And what dumbass thinks 12 year old kids need to be doing anything at 11;30 pm anyway?  Exactly!  I'm 42 and I'm not normally out at 11:30 (yeah I  know, I know).  This isn't because they don't have...

Re: Food and Bev magazine's Where to Eat Now: KC

Nice article. BTW, el pollo rey, not el pollo loco.  Big difference!  :D  If you haven't been to el pollo rey, it's worth a trip.  http://www.yelp.com/biz/el-pollo-rey-kansas-city .  That's some tasty chicken! Agreed.  It's our go to dish/place when we have a large group of people visiting.  2 whol...

Re: Pho Hoa - New vietnamese place on Indep. Ave.

We ate here on Saturday after boxing class.  Was very good.  Owner came around and thanked people for coming in.  He saw someone he'd seen before and said "thanks for coming back" to that person and his companion and the person wound up saying "he's never been here before".  Slig...

Re: Mama's burns...

We've been back to mama's twice since they reopened. It's nice but seems kind of antiseptic now.  gone is the artwork, small tables and just gneral "mama-ishness" of the place. Menu has changed a bit as well.  They don't have the 60+ omelets listed, now you can just choose the toppings to ...

If you like peppermint and chocolate, during the holiday season, it is worth heading to TJ for their Peppermint Joe Joe's.  they are chocolate sandwich cookies with peppermint canes crushed into the creme filling.  They are Incredible and far tastier than the oreo version (without the food coloring ...

Re: Urban Gardening and Landscaping

Checking back in to see how everyone's gardens are doing.  I've been on the road for two weeks and came home to massive changes in my garden.  The tomatoes are outgrowing their cages, the cucumbers are snaking off into the grass, cantaloupe blooms are appearing, some peppers have formed. How about y...

Re: Burrito Joe's

We went a few weekends ago for breakfast.  My husband had the same thing Heather did and thought it was good. I don't remember what I had to eat other than some chips and salsa.  Wasn't crazy about either or the guac that came with my meal (we love the guac at El Sol Azteca, giant portion made fresh...

Looks like the hotel is completely down.  I noticed driving by this morning that the KFC is also empty, not sure what happened there. http://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/news/2011/03/31/39rainbow-mixed-use-project-lands-tenant.html It also looks like the CVS down the street at 43rd and Rainbow is ...

Re: The KCMO School District

We also need to reform what we are feeding our kids in schools. These high-fat, high-carbohydrate lunches provided put kids in sugar comas and affect learning. The lack of exercise also contributes, so physical education must come back in. Agreed.  Here's a blog featuring a teacher who writes about...

Re: Urban Gardening and Landscaping

@warwickland Not just you.  Between the rain and the cold, frosty nights, I'm worried for my plants.  I think I'm going to start some seeds later on this summer outdoors as well. On a great note, we purchased another power tool (A string trimmer with a power head that allows you to change the end at...

Burrito Joe's is scheduled to open for their first day on Thursday with a lunch special for $1 and the secret password, per their facebook page (samples of food, not a whole entree I don't think).  Second day open will be on Saturday from 8-3 for breakfast and lunch. They are in the space formerly o...

Re: Urban Gardening and Landscaping

Okay, got the raised bed built and one more being built tomorrow.  I waited a bit to put out my plants (my neighbors put theirs out right before the last cold snap.  I went by the farmer's almanac!). The bed cost us about $10 to build (not counting the circular saw we purchased (which he swears we n...

Re: Urban Gardening and Landscaping

Shinatoo, very nice.  I may steal your rock border idea, it looks great.  I'd planned on having my husband build 2-3 3x6 beds, but he fractured his clavicle playing hockey last week and has to have surgery tomorrow to help repair it, so I'm either going to buy premade raised beds or buy the end brac...

Re: Urban Gardening and Landscaping

@KCMax - the cantaloupe were ridiculously easy to grow.  Last year was our first time growing them and with very little effort we got about 8 3-5 pound Super Star melons.  they just slipped from the vine easily when they were ripe and boy did they smell incredible. @MidtownGrrl.  I didn't get mine l...
