Re: Oak Tower

This is on a much smaller scale, but the base of the fairfax building is being restored after having been "modernized."

Re: Oak Tower

I've heard that it was because bits of it were falling off, so it was probably a liability issue. Seems like that's how a lot of crimes like this were justified, "We don't want to spend the money on maintaining our building so we're just going to ruin/bulldoze it."

Re: Oak Tower

I still wonder what the deal was with those first floors. Why were they intact?

Re: Oak Tower

Re: Oak Tower

Going back to Oak Tower itself, I recently went in the lobby of the building just to see what was in there. I was surprised to find that the room just to the right of the entrance is still decorated in art deco! They even have framed photos and blueprints of the building. I spoke to the one person w...

Re: Oak Tower

SW Bell actually did plan to enlarge the building with a twin on the McGee side and a tall gothic spire in between. It would have made it not only the largest building downtown, but also the tallest. There was also a plan in the late eighties to modify the "modernization" with vertical wi...

Re: Downtown Airport (MKC)

In the old picture, the Romanesque building in the top left corner with the tower is the old board of trade building. You can also see the junction of Main and Delaware behind the plane's left wing

I see it now. The fountain would be around the front of the plaza if it was all aligned right.

Sigh.
