Re: What is the best summer job KC has to offer?

I believe in Britain they are called "flats", ain't I right, Kard? And nope, I think I'll be more likely to fit in a suitcase than you, CC, so you're out, I'm in. I've always wanted to go to England!  They are indeed flats! And, fyi.... Parking lot=car park sidewalk=pavement truck=l...

Re: Rising gas prices: help or hurt the P&L?

From a msnbc article: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12400801/ Light, sweet crude for June delivery rose $1.48 to settle at a record $75.17 a barrel Friday on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after peaking at an all-time trading high of $75.35. The May contract, which expired Thursday, had settled at...

Re: Fixing the KC Zoo (ongoing)

This is a very good article on the plans for the KC Zoo.  While I think criticism of the zoo has been overblown, it seems they are addressing the key issues that did detract from the experience.  These include increasing animal density and moving away from an overly educational theme, getting some e...

Re: Above Kansas City...A fascinating aerial tour above KC's urban core!!!

These are great.  Especially the Plaza area shots, that's some pretty incredible density for a non-downtown area in a  midwestern city.  The way Brush Creek snakes through it is spectacular.  I also was impressed with the liberty memorial shots, if the inside of the museum is anything like the outsi...

Re: The backlash against McMansions

Finally, someone with some common sense.  I agree 100%. Back in those days, kids played outside, rarely played indoors, and often had a lot of chores to do, so they did not need a lot of space.  Plus a larger portion of the population back then was very poor and simply could not afford a larger hou...

Re: The backlash against McMansions

If you have a family, I don't see how anyone can stand to have anything less than 2,400 square feet. Do you have any idea how small 950 square feet is?  That's like a one bedroom apartment. families larger than those nowadays (on average) seemed to manage just fine in the first 100 years of post-in...

Re: Religious Groups of the USA - (map)

What really struck me about this map is, LOOK AT MISSOURI ! I had no idea it was that Baptist.  I figured with STL being so Catholic, and KCMO being that way to an extent, that the rural areas would be strongly Protestant as it's so heavily German (who are not Baptists, really) And look at Missouri...

Re: Above Eastern Jackson County

i understand that land is cheaper on the fringes...but that doesn't excuse wasteful land use and sprawl.  the entire metro could LOOK and FEEL like prairie village or Brookside, but it doesn't.  absurd zoning, big box mania, mcmansions, etc. have killed that.  we don't build character because devel...

Re: The backlash against McMansions

^ there is no doubt that McMansions are probably good investments in today's real estate market....but it wasn't always that way.  pure square footage as a mark of worthiness is a pretty recent phenomenon and the behemoth sizes of these homes is absurd. what most people dont know is that small hous...

Re: The backlash against McMansions

well, they ARE draining everyone else's resources.  the average new home size in 2006 is like 2,400 sq ft while it was like 950 sq. ft in the 1950s.  it is just so wasteful and ego-driven IMO. Well, I'd say part of it is ego driven but since house will be the biggest purchase you will probably ever...

Re: Saving our area's history and environment

i was really trying to avoid this thread... now that i've sat and read all three pages it's obvious that this is just another case of economy vs. nature. true naturalists or environmentalists will always put nature first, ahead of any man-made concept of money, economy, or civilization. if you're p...

Re: How about those Jayhawks, the redux...

Doesn't sound like anything that big, but who knows. The football program may take a hit due to the academic fraud. Most of the other stuff sounds pretty petty and I can't imagine it would lead to any major sanctions. At the very worst I think the football program gets some scholarships yanked, may...

This money is not for lining David Glass' pockets, it's intention was to make the Royals more competitive in recruiting.
Sounds a bit like embezzlement.

Re: Saving our area's history and environment

Funny you bring this up as the KC Star was reporting this morning (the article is no longer there) that a woman had been killed after colliding with a deer at I-435 and Front Street.  That's a semi-developed area near the Missouri River.  Four children in the car were OK.    This is turning out to ...

Re: What is outlook for The Mango Room?

Where is there space for outdoor seating on 12th and Main?  Seems like a pretty tight sidewalk at the corner there.    I'll have to give the Mango room another try when I am back in town.  I ate there once around Christmas for lunch (it wasn't to busy) and the food was not great.....but we may have ...

Re: Above Eastern Jackson County

i don't want to be too contentious, but i am deeply confused, even awed at the trend in suburban develpment to recreate brookside/northeast in the middle of what ought to be a sorghum field.  to me it speaks volumes about the bizzarre species of mental illness that afflicts our people. Actually, it...

Re: Saving our area's history and environment

Actually the zoo director believes they are coming (to eastern Nebraska) form Wyoming and South Dakota via our many creeks/streams. That would be more likely since many have their headwaters in Wyoming and the bottomlands are not all that populated in western Nebraska.  There are, by the way, some ...

I'll give credit to those who have been saying to wait before casting judgement on the aesthetics of this project.  You were right.  I am very impressed by the way these look with the landscaping in place.

Re: How about those Jayhawks, the redux...

So what is going to happen to KU's athletic programs with the NCAA making their findings known today?  I did not read the summary in detail but the words "lack of institutional control" were used which generally means major sanctions.  Will only the football program get hit or is basketbal...

Re: Saving our area's history and environment

Has Kansas City had any recent 'clashes' with nature?   Omaha is experiencing (although there are alot of false reports now coming in with all the excitement) a surge in encounters with mountain lions in the metro area.  These animals haven't been in this part of the state for probably 100 years.  ...
