Re: Uptown Arts Bar to open in Betsy Ross Building

I just wish the news media would start referring to specific neighborhoods in crime and fire reporting instead of general areas. For example, they constantly report crimes and fires on the "east side," but the area is so vast that it doesn't really give the listener or reader a real idea ...

Re: Best Middle Eastern / Mediterranean food in the KC area.

My experiences are similar to both of yours. I suggest Zaina downtown. It is shaved, folded in pita, topped with salad and yogurt sauce and (if you ask) red sauce). Delicious!

Also, for some reason that reminded me of Cheesy Blasters. http://youtu.be/p1W8R5TSNNk

Re: Best Middle Eastern / Mediterranean food in the KC area.

Kebab usually refers to grilled meat on a stick. In Turkish cuisine, doner kebab is essentially Turkish gyro meat (lamb marinated in onion and grilled on a vertical rotisserie with various spices). The pinnacle of doner kebab (imo) is Iskender kebab, which is doner meat served over pita and slather...

What distinguishes doner from a regular kebab? Couldn't seem to get Google to tell me.

Re: Best Middle Eastern / Mediterranean food in the KC area.

The kebab at Zaina is fantastic. I haven't had a proper Doner since I was in England about 6 years ago. At Zaina, get the kebab (not the platter) and ask for the red sauce. It's the closest I've found to my memories of London.

Ha, well they used to charge beyond the first basket. Perhaps that policy has changed--haven't been in probably six months.

Ponaks has been supplanted by Los Tules, for us. Less crowded and better view with equally tasty margaritas.
But you have to pay for the chips! In America! The food and margaritas are great though...

We visit Caddyshack regularly, Hien Vuong, Harry's CC, and Hickok's. Also, Pizza Bella, D'Bronx, and Pizza 51 somewhat frequently.

Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar

Also, regarding Portland streetcars, could you try to snap some pictures of the boarding platforms? I was really impressed with the whole process in Portland and hope that KC manages an equally pleasant platform environment.

Glad to hear it! We've gone for brunch a few times and really enjoyed it. Any idea when The Boot is opening? I was under the impression it would be open by now. I notice that it's listed on OpenTable.

i'll be riding the modern streetcar systems in portland, seattle, and tacoma this week. any reconnaissance you'd like me to gather? I'd like you to note how smooth the Portland ride is compared to Seattle's and note any particular reason why Portland's is smoother... When we were out there a few mo...

Re: All-Star game impact on P&L empty storefronts

I guess my thought was finally pushing a tenant that may have been on the fence over the edge and signing. Like I said probably too late now to actually build out something. If Alex Jones can do a pop-up restaurant in a matter of weeks, why couldn't some limited operation set up there, at least for...

This is the greatest thread ever written. I've learned a ton from phuqueue's posts and gotten frustratingly good entertainment from AKP's "well-reasoned responses."

Thank you both.

Re: The KCMO School District

If the North Kansas City School District were to be extended south of the river, I think all of the newly encompassed residential units would see a huge increase in value. Literally my only concern about remaining in the city forever is sending kids to school. Though, admittedly, I'm less concerned ...

Re: Favorite Movie Theater?

We visit the Mainstreet and Cinemark Plaza most often. Like Chrizow said, the Cinemark is nice and cheap. We also make the drive out to the Screenland Armour quite regularly. It's in our main rotation, love the red leather recliners, the small town experience of it. Too bad there isn't a damn thing...

I think Main Street is the best experience of going to the movies by far. Such nice theaters, awesome concessions. Really a state-of-the-art place.
