Re: YJ's has group trips but no health insurance?

So much for personal responsibility.  Let someone else cover your ass.  America's going to shit. So you were against HCR, and wanting to leave things up to individuals and business owners, right? Then why all the problems with how this particular business owner conducts his business? Honest questio...

Re: YJ's has group trips but no health insurance?

Let me know where you found a trip to Morocco for $500.00.  I have some vacation time coming. Me too. Sounds nice & cheap. Or are you saying that my argument isn't (as) valid because it costs more than $500 to get to Morocco? OK. Ten tickets to Morocco at $1200 apiece: $12,000. Ten health insur...

Re: YJ's has group trips but no health insurance?

Just as another point of reference: Health insurance at my company hovers around $300 per person, per month. We're a small company, like YJs is. The older guys here & those with families (some of the YJ's crew are married with kids as well) end up at around $800/month for insurance. At our (fair...

Re: YJ's has group trips but no health insurance?

Why is it the employer's "responsibility"?  Only reason you think that way is due to how the government set up the tax code.  What does "personal responsibility" have to do with the actions of your employer?  If this was about "personal responsibilty" than we would all...

Re: The Health Care Debate

blame big business...ignore the fact that Obama admitted that the GOP understood the bill and had valid concerns re: specific provisions. Easier to blame big business than the shitty bill. Dems are in control of Congress. No-one else to blame but themselves (or the bill) if it doesn't pass. PXCat p...

Re: Pavement is coming!!!

The Jicks (Malkmus' current band) stopped in Lawrence last year, not KC. I'm a little surprised that Pavement is actually going to be in KC instead of Lawrence! I'll definitely be at this one... and at the NYC show a few days before it.

Re: I can't wait for the new smoking ban in Kansas City!

It's somewhat refreshing to see logical arguments on this topic from both sides. Obviously, smoking is not a defined right in the constitution -- and neither is the right to be free from second-hand smoke. It's really tiresome to hear anti-smokers complaining about their "right to breathe smoke...

Re: I can't wait for the new smoking ban in Kansas City!

Yes because god knows that in non-nanny states thousands of people are savagly injured or killed through the victomization of having to view the bare human flesh.  We also know America is filled with people who desperately want to walk around without pants but somehow find the restraint not to out ...

Pants indeed! You know, the Nazis also made people wear certain garments!
Now that you mention it, laws that mandate pants-wearing are about as useless as anti-smoking laws.

Re: campaign finance unleashed

The supreme court decision wasn't about granting more power to corporations, or whether corporations "should be treated like individuals". Those types of statements seem to be fairly prominent and greatly oversimplify what this case was about. John Stossel wrote an interesting article on t...

Re: I can't wait for the new smoking ban in Kansas City!

Fail - I haven't been a smoker for about 15 years.  Like many freedom-loving Americans, I believe in standing up for civil liberties even when I don't have a self-serving interest.  A time-honored way to show unconditional support for civil liberties & personal rights is to stand up for fringe ...

Re: campaign finance unleashed

So it's going to be either bad or really bad as a result of the court's decision. Which party is going to benefit more and in more corrupt ways from this ruling? Does anyone actually believe that the Dems are any less in bed already with the unions & with big business than the Republicans are?

Re: campaign finance unleashed

The net effect on everyday politics in America will be zero. The volume and belligerence of the campaigns themselves will, of course, increase in proportion to the campaign budgets.

Re: The Official Kansas City Weather Thread

Today's actually the first time in 18 days that I haven't seen a plow working on a KCMO street.   They've been plowing like crazy. Yep. I was seeing them go up and down Summit street a couple times per day whenever it began to accumulate. They've certainly been busy on all the semi-major thoroughfa...

Man... some of those ryes are delicious. Staying away from scotches completely, I'd recommend Booker's and Basil Hayden's. I've had one of the Hirsch bottles that was pretty tasty, too, but they're all over the map as far as price is concerned. Isle of Skye is an affordable way to get a 'daily dram'...

When I saw the guy headed to the door, keys in his hand, I asked the hostesses if they really wanted the guy to leave their restaurant in that kind of shape and drive away and perhaps they should call him a taxi.  I got a blank stare.  That's all I would have done. You can't take care of all the w...

Re: DART houses?

I can't think of any circumstances in which a bank would give someone a mortgage on a tax foreclosure.  Maybe if had collateral property next door.  You could have a title report, but not likely title insurance.  Most people just wing it and expect they'll be okay because the government is involved...

Re: DART houses?

You have to be careful at a tax sale.  Its the County's way of collecting back taxes and getting crap property back on the tax rolls.  There is not much disclosure. It's sounding more and more like this was exactly the case in this instance. FIrst-hand info says that there was zero disclosure. Buye...

Re: DART houses?

I believe that the property in question was seized by the city & sold at tax auction, not through a realtor. Still, you'd think there would be some very serious discussion & contracts with an unusual property such as this. Who knows... but yeah, you're right, dangerboy, there must've been la...

Re: DART houses?

Ah... now that I've figured out what DART stands for, the google searches are a bit easier. In a nutshell, DART houses are drug houses that are basically temporarily made uninhabitable due to codes violations. No one can be in them, even as an owner, without permits. The house is brought up to code ...
