Re: New Broadway Bridge
For reference, the blue is the extent of Interstate Highway, I-35/I-70. The Lewis & Clark Viaduct and north loop would be the US-24 boulevard, with local access. This could candle the exiting from the freeways for the north side of the loop, without all of the terrible interchanges that exist n...

Re: KC Metro apartment inventory is low
I can't help but wonder what happens to these acres and acres of suburban apartment buildings designed around the automobile in 50 years. The worst of the worst slums? Who will want to live in them? Will they undermine the value of the neighboring single family housing? They just seem to be filling ...

A drive-thru sub shop is not the best use for this site.
What the site is best suited for is a Quik Trip with a car wash.

New KC Zoo Penguin Exhibit
I went to the zoo today. For some reason I thought the new penguin exhibit was open. Well, it opens tomorrow (Friday) so I could not go in. I stood there for quite some time and soaked in the terrible architecture. The upper panels of mixed blue colors are nice, but the rest of the building (all 4 s...

I had a burger and fries there during lunch a few months back. The place was almost deserted and the food was terrible (and I am easy to please).

Re: new parking lot landscaping
The landscaping at the KCPA proves that using native plantings works even in an urban setting. The little bluestem, oaks, and redbuds look so natural against the limestone colored concrete. The conifers are not native, but then the only native evergreen is cedar. Of course this is not a xeriscape b...

Re: new parking lot landscaping
What is better?....a hour long walk in 105 degree heat along a native grass path or a tree lined path? Who takes an hour long walk in 105 degree weather, and how many parking lots are they going to pass in an hour? Enough to keep them from experiencing heat stroke? If we design cities to be tolerab...

Re: new parking lot landscaping
You need the trees for other things like: defining space, heat island, transpiration (reducing temps), flood reduction, air cleaning, etc. Oh yea....shade for walks and parking is nice too. Just for the record native grasses are better at all those things than trees except for providing shade and (...

Re: new parking lot landscaping
Why trees and shrubs? They require a lot of water and maintenance. On the other hand, native grasses and flowers can provide an effective screen, better condition the soil to absorb runoff, and require minimal maintenance once established. You need the trees for other things like: defining space, h...

Re: Taco Republic in Westwood
I hope this remodel and the new Walmart Grocery store will rub off on the Roeland Park corner (SW corner). Those are the best buildings at that node, yet continue to languish. I also keep hearing from old-timers (sorry....hippies from the '70s) that the building just north of this taco place was the...

Re: Westport's fate post-P&L
Marrakech Cafe moving due to smell I went twice early on. Great food. Unbearable odor. Refused to go back. I hope he is able to reopen. I would be a lunch regular if he stays in Westport. I really like his old location, but that building is forever doomed. I never see anyone going into the rug shop...
