Re: Armour Road Redevelopment Area (ARRA)
The Star has more details on the plan: http://www.kansascity.com/news/business/development/article124375369.html Worner’s plans include two hotels comprising about 200 rooms, along with a conference center, a grocery store, 200 market-rate apartments, restaurants and other retail developments at the...

Re: Gumbel Building (Hampton Inn)
This past weekend, the Tiger Tail update their signage and is now "KC's Garage Kitchen & Bar"; the associated Facebook and Twitter pages' first posts were on October 19. Anyone know if this incarnation is the same owner(s)? Other than the new name, it doesn't look like anything else ch...

Re: Instant runoff voting in KC
Yeah, I'd love to see it used more broadly, but given that KC mayor and city council elections on their own schedule, it's a good place to start with an election that will always have a small number of ballot items anyway.

Instant runoff voting in KC
This has been brewing in the back of my mind for a while, but after I found out that a instant-runoff/ranked choice voting referendum in Maine passed this week , I think it's time to bring it here, and I think it'd be rather easy to build support a broad nonpartisan support base for it if we play ou...

Re: Politics
In reality, very little, but just like the Brexit vote and the rise of nationalist populism in Europe, it sends a very loud message that a lot of people in industrialized countries feel left behind economically, are convinced that free trade hurts more than helps them personally, and are very uncomf...

Re: Westport's fate post-P&L
It's not explained fully in the article, but it looks like Ça Va got around their liquor licensing issues by creating a new business entity, getting a restaurant license for the new business, and then merging the existing business into the new one.

Re: Downtown Entertainment
I don't blame them for not trying it when they moved/consolidated locations, but given that the current iteration of Screenland Crossroads Tapcade is already both a theater and a bar/restaurant, it seems like they missed an opportunity to have a concert venue in the missing size range being discussed.

Re: Downtown Entertainment
Downtown is in desperate need of a legit 500-1100 person music venue. Not an old redone bar with poor sight lines and a stage in the corner, but a real venue that consistently (2-6 shows per week) brings in national level talent. There's a big hole in that market right now and well, since the Beaum...

Re: KCI Flight Schedule Adjustments
New Orleans was the 37th-busiest airport (by number of passenger boardings) in the US last year...KCI was #38.
There was an article in the Star a couple years ago noting that about 300 people/day go from KCI to Europe in the summer season.

I'm not nearby during weekdays often enough to say for sure, but it sure looks like work has ground to a halt in turning the old Zaina location into a Picklemans. (If memory serves me, they had a "opening this summer" banner up when they started the remodeling work...which has since been r...

Re: TIME TO FREAK OUT AGAIN ABOUT CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT! THE BIG 12 IS DEAD! MAYBE!
From everything I've heard, that rumor was just Texas/Oklahoma media types stirring the pot. The Big Ten has *way* more money coming in than the Big 12 does now (and will for the foreseeable future), even after adjusting for 14 vs 10 members. If the Big 12 is hell-bent on expansion, the existing mem...

I *think* the first floor is being used as an event space, too; it looked like it was being set up for a wedding when I walked by there a couple Saturdays ago.

Re: Status and future of the River Market area??
It's difficult for prices to rise, and for the market otherwise to function sanely, when far and away the market's biggest supplier—the city—has zero profit motive and otherwise makes decisions as intelligently as a retarded kindergartner with a heroin habit up two hours past his bedtime. As River ...

Re: The Health Care Debate
Given that there's a strong correlation between "the % more on health care the US spends than the average other developed countries do" and "the % of overall health care spending in the US captured by insurance companies" (about 20%, in both cases), the cynic in me is inclined to...

In a side note, the Switzer Lofts apartments now have open houses every Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM. They are asking $850 for 348 sq. ft. and over $2,000 for a 2 bed 1324 sq. ft. I haven't been looking at apartments recently, but that seems kinda crazy to me. The facebook is also pretty much setup ...

Re: Gumbel Building (Hampton Inn)
I'm not shedding too many tears over this news.
Given that the location itself can only be polished so much...even if the next incarnation of what goes in there is just an shift from "dive bar" to "neighborhood bar", it'd be a welcome upgrade.
