Re: Film Row building threatened with demolition
Man you make an excellent point that I haven't been thinking much of lately. Signage is really a HUGE part of this. The whole vibrancy of downtown really depends on it. Walk around Power and Light at night, and is it any wonder that it is by far the most vibrant part of downtown? No way. There are b...

Re: On-going downtown development projects
Has Copaken put forth a plan for the block with Zoo Bar? Or is this the block they are talking about could get a tower? It would certainly be a shame if they tore that building down, and losing the Zoo would be devastating. That simply can't happen. It should be saved regardless of who designed it. ...

Boom! And just like that you have created a better plan than them. I like it. That would be a good looking development, and it seems very doable.

it has a unique midcentury look. if it wasn't just 4 stories I could get upset over the replacement Honestly, I am a little upset about this. I mean what do they plan on replacing it with? I think it's a pretty good looking building, and I'm not even a fan of that style of architecture. It addresse...

Holy crap this is an old thread! It was started by none other than Devin, the wonderboy. I wasn't even Demosthenes back at that time. I don't even remember what my original name was, that's how long ago it was. Pre-Power and Light District. Pre-Sprint Center. The basketball mural and Soakies were bo...

Re: P&L sales taxes double during conventions
Interesting article. Anyone notice that it says retail is planned for One Light? I believe 2,500 square feet is what it said. I could have sworn there was no retail planned. This is very awesome if so. No sense in not stacking retail here. This is a major intersection in the middle of downtown. With...

Re: On-going downtown development projects
Yes bay windows are really awesome. Architects used to incorporate bay windows into buildings to creatively add space when there wasn't much to be had. Now days architects generally have more space to work with, and when they don't, they make more space (by tearing down adjacent buildings or combini...

Is Executive Plaza the cube building? If so I think it is structurally unsound. I have heard much talk of demolition as well, and as much as we don't need another vacant lot in the north loop, I would have no problem losing that sucker.

It's interesting how many retail spaces beneath garages sit vacant. This Webster space, the one on Main where Souperman used to be, the City Center Square garage on Baltimore where Italian Gardens used to be, etc. I don't think any retail has ever gone into the space in the City Center garage. It is...

I wonder what would happen if we did away with parking minimums completely in greater downtown? Businesses, employers, and residential buildings would only provide parking if they wanted, not because they were required to do it. Do you think a lot of surface lots would be sold, or developed quicker...

I love both of those ideas Fang. Either build similar row homes next to it all down 17th, or put in an apartment building like in that first picture right next to it. Definitely build around it. Then I think they should build a bit higher density along Broadway, but definitely creating a streetwall....

Extremely underwhelming. What do you expect from Gastinger Walker Harden though? These are the same architects who designed the bank building at 43rd and Main. Would have liked these to at least be 3 stories. And facing the street. And I have no idea what free surface parking means, but it doesn't s...

Would prefer the bottom of the building be aligned with the street grid and the top askew. Would give a buillding on the skyline that is not an obedient soldier.l Exactly. I agree 100%. The way it currently twists looks... well frankly stupid. I say, why not build a 25 story office building that is...

Well, I'd say it depends on what side you are looking at. One side of the building actually looks rather nice (or so I think anyway), and then the other side (I think the front) looks awful. The bad side looks as if an alien building is bursting out of the belly of the original one. Quite odd, and d...

Yes indeed, excellent renovation. Haven't been that way in a long time, but last time I saw that building I was scared they might tear it down. Glad to see they beautified it!

Don't forget all the publicity KC is getting these days. Face it guys, Kansas City is an IT town right now. Featured articles in the NY Post, Forbes, Huffington Post, and even articles across the seas are showing KC as a super hip city right now. This is certainly boosting our tourism. Not to mentio...

Historic Interstate Building downtown will be converted into a Holiday Inn Express: http://www.kansascity.com/news/business/article7704737.html Seems things are moving pretty quickly now that the new owner has control of the building. Btw it seems that this building's owner is the same guy who owns ...

I'l very optimistic about where Troost is headed right now. East of Troost, I know that Manheim has a lot of current residential construction activity going on and a lot more planned. Squier Park is in the same typical housing shortage we've been in for the last 3-4 years. Houses typically stay on ...

OK, enough of the Cerner talk. Not going to happen. Let's resume the discussion about buildings that actually exist downtown and what might be done with them.
