Blight and Perceptions

We can afford a couple million dollars to beautify empty buildings and derelict sidewalks? Does that sound strange to anyone else? What the city needs to do is encourage economic development, not fix broken windows. New businesses will clean up their corner of the world, without being asked or paid....

Westport Live Saturday Night

I was there until about 10PM. A tip, don't gorge on barbecue before going out. That makes for early nights. I was hoping the whole thing would start earlier, like when it was still light out, but they seemed to be just setting up about when we walked out.

So, I didn't really experience it.

That looks like the black fortress of the Skeksis in the Dark Crystal.

Please don't give me the same bad dreams I had when that movie came out.

Restaurants in the mostly African-American part of KC??

Why are you so careful with the word, "African?" African-American is just another term to use to single black people out as different. I don't see the point in using it. If you're using the term "African" food, to describe food with origins on the continent of Africa, all I can t...

If that's what KWB is planning, then cool, but it's not what I've heard/read. What I have been seeing is plans for a cultural/performing arts center. This, while certainly a nice amenity for KC, does not complement an arena, and nor does an arena complement a performing arts center. They are both ce...

Holy geez! Are you for real? This is awesome!

I will be there _all summer_ if this really is true.

Sigh. I heard that the Plaza used to have tons of shops that were unique to KC and the Plaza. The SoLo/crossroads/garment/art/whatever district is currently booming, in my opinion. That will definitely be a very happening place within a few years, but the architecture will not be very distinct, I th...

Unfortunately, in this day and age these investments won't materialize unless the city funds them or gives away free land and 25-year tax breaks. I hardly consider giving people and companies tax breaks "funding them." It's more like desisting in theft. I was referring to proposing tax _i...

Re: Proposed reduction in KCATA service

Well, what is the current deal with cab companies? I never take cabs, because of how much they cost, yet I see poor people getting in and out of them(particularly at the grocery store) all the time.

That said, I would love to see a non-municipal body try to make an inroad into regional transit.

I find it surprising that it has taken KC this long for a place that sells screwy pizza to show up. Don't get me wrong, I love their pizza, but it's not like it's some revolutionary idea to put chicken and barbecue sauce on a pizza.

Such civic luxuries are the fruits of prosperity, and nobody needs to push them, if they really will work. They will materialize, like grocery stores and restaurants. The last thing we need is developers leveraging the city for funds to build something, when the city is already hemmorhaging money. T...

I'm saying don't worry about how long it takes. Who cares if it takes longer to ride than to drive? The bus is going that way, anyway. If it's a pain in the butt in your car, don't take your car. The ATA has a schedule it roughly follows, and you can easily just go by that.

'In the Life" moving to crossroads district

Well, for the most part, the Westport folks(the bargoers, anyway) aren't generally urban-dwellers, and urban-dwellers(I find) are a bit more accepting of people different than themselves than the typical Westport clubber.

Not trying make a definition. Just stating what I have noticed.

Avoid the hassle of the downtown lights by taking the bus and reading to forget about your surroundings.

While an arena/ballpark will make downtown look better, it won't actually change anything, materially. Downtowns(and any places, for that matter) improve with economic opportunity, and not with museums, performing arts centers, and sport venues. Those wonderful things are results(symptoms) of prospe...

I have a buddy from KC who just took a two-year contract in Orlando. His plan is to finish that up, and move back to KC and get a downtown condo, because this area will, as he says, "blow up." I can't help but agree, if the present course is resumed.

I think Westport would become much more of a local nightspot if the discotheques went elsewhere, and I agree heartily that they would fit well downtown. What draws the people from outside the relatively immediate neighborhood is not Buzzard Beach or AC's Garage. People come from Lee's Summit and Len...

Late Night Helicopters

I am not sure if I have heard enough helicopters in Midtown to be used to them yet(not like police and ambulance sirens), but I honestly just don't hear them that much. I could have thick walls or something, but all I ever hear outside is the occasional fireworks show, planes flying over head, siren...

More arguments against a hub airport

I have flown SW 6 times since 9/11(it being my favorite airline, hands down), and getting in and out of security at KCI is fine. As for Denver's fares going up, such is life. The hub style is a dying breed, and that's fine with me. The solution should be another company(or transit method) coming in ...
