Re: 5th and Main (Northwest Corner)

One must recognize that placing affordable housing in the most expensive type of new building -- a highrise with mandated structured parking -- is the worst way possible to create affordable housing units. With all due respect, why is it the worst way? I hope it's not just because the haves don't w...

The neglect, on balance, was permitted by the very people growling about gentrification AND coincidentally: Demanding low cost housing in the subject district.
I'd like to know more about how these people permitted this neglect.

Re: KC in TV and Movies

It's never cited among Altman's top 10 films. Some lists don't cite it among his top 15. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 59 percent rating. Except for MASH, I've never liked or understood any Altman film after one viewing. When Kansas City came out, I saw it at a theater and was disappointed, but also c...

Re: KC in TV and Movies

“Mr. and Mrs. Bridge” was a Ward Parkway film, “Kansas City” an 18th and Vine film. Different worlds different movies. I think Altman’s film was a tough valentine to his hometown. How can a city with such a rich black musical heritage still have as strict a dividing line as Troost? Like the City, t...

Re: NE Corner of 14th & Wyandotte (300 unit apartment)

The P&L has always needed a building on it's west side that matches the height of it's tallest parapet. There is nothing on the west elevation, except the light tower, that should be visible. For almost ninety years two of KC's best art deco buildings have been separated by a surface parking lot...

35 rooms is irrelevant I see you often say many projects/acquisitions KC makes are irrelevant. But bit by bit all these projects add up to alot over time. It's important to take any little piece we can get- this space is gonna have a much better ground floor retail space as well. It’s 35 hotel room...

Re: Arabia Steamboat Museum Looking for New Home

If St. Charles can build the museum on the Missouri river I'll look forward to a visit. The actual river needs to be part of the museum experience. The current location is depressing because you exit out of a freight house basement that's 5 blocks from the river. A rebuilt city wharf at the foot of ...

Re: OFFICIAL - East Village

While the land bankers are waiting for downtown to become the next Austin, why don’t they build and lease some 1-2 story disposable-buildings with surface lots behind, and make some money while waiting for the big payoff? I think there is a demand for more low rent retail in the loop. Probably more...

Re: OFFICIAL - East Village

I hate how the Biz frames this as being some sort of smart real estate investment, and not what it is, which is holding back downtown with landbanking There are north loop lots owned by small fish that have not been bought up and developed. The guys in the article are relatively small fish too. The...

Re: West Bottoms Redevelopment

Once these guys get demolition pricing on the Weld Wheel building maybe they will revisit the apartment plan. The east facade would have looked much better with all the planned new window openings. Tearing down this building would be as awful as the Board of Education removal.

The UG is now rebuilding the levees on both sides of the Kaw and will include walking/biking trails and recreational access to the river. The Rock Island bridge is set to be an entertainment/dining river crossing. The land on both sides of the Kaw is owned by people very interested in redevelopment....

Re: 10th and Main Southwest Corner (former transit center)

You got to root for any project Tomas "Buzz" Willard is against, but it's hard not to be skeptical because of 3rd and Grand. Why can't the KCATA get anything built? I wonder how this project would affect Copaken Brooks Macy's site? Along with Lightwell and Mark Twain redevelopment, filling...

I bought into the idea the new bridge would benefit the removal of the north loop. Now it's looking like nothing more than a way for JOCO and Northlanders to avoid an awkward stoplight at 6th and Broadway.

The great news is the UG is wanting to get DT KCK, the Kaw River and their side of West Bottoms included as part of Urban Kansas City. However, I hope the gondola idea gets replaced by the idea of a streetcar running from 8th & Main, down through the EXISTING 8th Street tunnel, then along 9th fo...

100% occupied. Great news Wonderful news. Along with the sluggish rates at Artistry and Galleria, it shows downtown renters are becoming more intelligent in their choice of neighborhoods, style of architecture, and quality of construction. Will developers pay attention or just continue to put subur...

Re: Capping the Loop

The Baltimore to Wyandotte block with the elevation change is the key to making this cap worthwhile. Would make for a cool useful elevation for events, etc. Gotta find a way to get that as part of the project. Yes, like Spanish Steps in Rome, or stairway to Sacre Coeur in Paris. I agree a stair her...
