I could write a long attempt to explain it, but I think the regulars on this board are familiar enough to have an opinion on it. I am only peripherally familar with the work of Henry George, et al, and I think they (the land tax crowd) are spot on in almost everything I've read. However, I think th...

They aren't necessarily good. But if we're going to build it we're going to build it, and it will sink or swim. I'd much rather see the city get its budget in shape first, but that is probably a hopeless dream. That was a pretty good article, Que, although you didn't highlight some of the parts I wo...

It means shut up. You aren't in the Chicago Admirer's Club, so go away and let us have our fun. Here are the minutes for last month's meeting: 1. Everyone sat down and ritually masturbated to pictures of Richard Daley 2. Meeting called to order 3. Rufus bent over and took the whole blue line up his ...

Great, fabulous, and fantastic. Now we need to get these projects completed, get thousands more people down there, and we will be ready to take on Denver, then the world. BWHAHAHAHAH

We are largely in agreeance. I'm not sure there's enough people living there right now to spur the volume of development needed, but I'm also not sure that putting the budget further in the red to spur development is the right choice. I think that as more people move in, we will continue to see busi...

The thing is, there is this idea that many people have, that the economic machine doesn't, and can't work. It can and does, but I think many people only have a vague understanding of how it works, and assume that it can't work because the current "successful" economic model is suburbia, w...

Sounds kind of like MARC with more power to get things to the voters. I'd like to see an office with the attitude that they will try just about anything. Present it to the voters. Have frequent elections. Personally, I think we should have mayoral elections every year. Didn't do anything this year? ...

Yes, Chicago is a LOT bigger than KC...duh!....it's similar to comparing Topeka to Kansas City. Topeka is a lot closer to KC than KC is to Chicago. Compare Chicago to New York, LA, or San Francisco. I don't live in NY, LA, or SF, and I personally don't care how they compare to Chicago. I live in KC...

Nice, Devin! Oak Tower used to be so awesome. I knew it was cool, but that detail of the windows blows my mind. HOW COULD THEY COVER THAT UP?!?!?

I don't know about David Glass, but Lamar Hunt said he'd pay $30 million extra out of his pocket for the total renovation cost. I wasn't aware of that, it is good news. That's exactly the type of commitment I'd be looking for, although it is way less than half. More like 1/6. Still, it beats the he...

It's funny, people on this forum from JOCO care more about your KCMO stadiums than you do! That's why JOCO is better than KCMO and always will be. Much more progressive thinkers out here in the second smartest city in America. You people piss me off on here because you always settle for less and ar...

When? Another decade from now? If Kansas City would make the right choices, it could happen sooner than that. Within a decade, easy. But it will take a while for the progress we're making now to counter fifty years of neglect. That's just how it is. On a side note, I was looking at Pittsburgh's &qu...

Yeah, but they pay less in rent than I do. I vote no. They've had hundreds of millions in upgrades every couple years for the past 20 years and it's still not good enough. We need to realize that it never will be, there is always room for improvement, and as long as we keep paying more and more mone...

Starting with a land tax, I imagine he'd abolish sales and personal income taxes at the city level to increase desirability to residents, and levy no or extremely low income or property taxes on businesses to encourage development without need for tax abatements. Gasoline may be taxed higher, or per...
