Re: Dismantling of Great Mall (ongoing)
When will ownership officially pull the plug and try to redevelop the site? I'm certain this location could sustain a decent-sized shopping center with traditional department stores and typical mall fare. That thing is too far on the exurban fringe to be successful for another few decades. This wh...

Re: Metcalf Redevelopment
There is more retail in (northeast) JOCO than can be supported by their own population. (Northeast) Johnson County is going to have to start eliminating retail space, not adding more capacity. This is the wisest thing ever written in the KCRag forums (pardon my additions). The excess retail s.f. i...

Re: Overland Park's Second, Third, Forth, etc TIF
The rumors have started! I read that the owner of the strip mall across the street (SEC of 95th & Antioch) is not renewing leases or raising lease rates to encourage the center to go vacant so they can also request TIF money. Let the cycle begin! They feel they need to do this to be able to com...

Re: Overland Park's First TIF
Now watch for all the "me too" owners of neglected NorthOP strip centers come begging for financial assistance to do a remodel, so they can raise their rental rates and make more profits. North OP is lucky the school district is still excellent. That is the only thing that has kept the ar...

Re: Overland Park's First TIF
I was told by the manager of Missouri Tables and Chairs during their close-out sale a couple years ago at Cherokee South that the landlord was tripling the rent on him and he was planning to close and open a new store in the future, elsewhere. He said that he spoke with other representatives of the...

(My) Preferred list of 10 street trees for Downtown: Zelkova: What a great street tree, yet is not even on the KCMO "approved" list. Actually, most of my preferred trees are not on the "list". Red Oak/Shumardii Oak: These are both great trees that do great once established. Ba...

Those are good comments, omenapt. So a question to whoever reads this and knows their trees well:

Street Tree Plan for Downtown
Here is the map of the street trees planned for downtown. I find this to be a very odd selection and I wanted to get the opinion of those of you out there that are tree experts. Why so many Maples? Why so many Ash? What is up with all those Ginkgos??? http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2280/14913224...

Does anyone recognize this building that was being torn down? The image comes from the city-wide comprehensive plan from 1957.

I have worked in Westport forever and never heard anything about this before! The article basically states that the entire west half of Westport was a black community. Is that really the case? Or was it more accurate to say that the area contained a few black families. It's not like the area is/...

Re: New development on the north side of Cleaver Blvd, east of the Plaza
I have not seen reference toward this demolition so I thought I would add it here. I saw that there are plans to demolish these building to build new condos and a hotel. This is on 47th, between the Plaza and Nelson-Atkins. Anyone know anything about this? They had the buildings checked out and ...

Re: OFFICIAL: The Streets at Metcalf (Metcalf South redevelopment)
In case you didn't know.....this project has been stopped. Sears (Kmart now owns Sears) stepped in to stop the project since they own 1/3rd of the site. It could come up again, but for now....DEAD. Apparently Sears does not think they would do better business with a site transformation. All it w...
