Re: New Broadway Bridge

KC needs fewer highways, not more. This bridge redesign works to further the cause of adding highways everywhere, regardless of need. The bridge's replacement needs to have a modest design to provide access to the downtown airport, and should be pursuant to redirecting through-traffic to the Bond Br...

Re: New Broadway Bridge

I get what you are saying but moving 169 to the west side of the airport is not an option. Talk about getting in the way of the airport. They just needed to make 169 transition into a city street and stop trying to make it an interstate, but everybody's main goal is to have it be an interstate. Bec...

Re: New Broadway Bridge

It's really sad to see. Why is it that highway architects think that our society values nothing above highways themselves? The north side of downtown has been savaged by these highways. We should be reducing highway real estate, not adding it. In my ideal world, 169 would veer to the west, following...

Definitely not in the time I've hosted it, which began in 2006, I believe.

Re: The Future

The burden of activating users isn't particularly severe. Also though, I am committed to this forum existing ad-free. I promised years ago that it would be forever. Tapatalk offers no option for any price to keep ads off a forum with this level of traffic. Only individual users can pay a monthly fee...

Re: The Future

We have tried numerous automated ways to combat the spam, but there is simply no bot-proof method. I have activated 14 new users in 2020, and while I agree that's a very low number, that is out of 954 registrations. The vast majority of these are bots. Even including the 14 users I activated, only s...

Folding @ Home

I decided that I should use my extra CPU cycles for good, so I've installed Folding@Home on my home machine. I ran it back in the kcgeek days in 2001-2005ish, but they have a linux client now, which makes me happy. I created a new team, called Kansas City Folders, and if anyone wants to join, it's t...

Would you be interested in sharing numbers regarding bandwidth, traffic counts, database size, hosting costs, etc? Hosting for the server on which this site runs(and constitutes 99.9999-repeating% of the host's traffic and use) is $20 a month. Annual domain renewal is about $15. Mail delivery is be...

Like this community? You can support it!

As this site and community have grown, so too has the cost of keeping it up and running. Apart from some generous individual donations, I have borne the cost myself and will continue to do so as long as I'm able, as the site and its neutrality are very important to me. But you can help defray or may...

This is great news, and there's already a patron! I think I will de-globalize this post, and post a new global with the patreon link front and center.

Re: The Future

Patreon doesn't show an annual option. Maybe someone who's versed in the platform can provide some guidance, but here is the first form of the page that I was able to throw together using royalty-free images and slap-dash prose: patreon.com/kcrag I would be delighted to have some feedback on what su...

As this site and community have grown, so too has the cost of keeping it up and running. Apart from some generous donations, I have borne the cost myself, as the site and its neutrality are very important to me. That said, I would like to explore ways to fund this site other than by myself. I have m...

Re: New major version of phpBB, and PHP

I've copied the avatars over, but it looks like a lot are still missing. If you want yours to appear, I recommend grabbing it again and uploading.

I don't know if it's real or if it's just late at night, but the forum seems even faster now. Anybody else think so?

New major version of phpBB, and PHP

I'm still dialing things in, as I had to go a bit more nuclear with the update than in previous updates. We are now using phpBB version 3.3.0, up from 3.2.8, and php version 7.3, up from 5.6. I see we're missing avatars, so I will try to pull those from the backed up old forum, but if you see anythi...

Re: Move to a new server

Has anyone else found themselves needing to log back in every visit since the move? I click "Remember me" each time and it never does. That was definitely the case for me before the move to https, but now my logins persist on all my devices. Though also, if it does idle me out, my browser...
