Re: Is Midtown Marketplace one of the city's greatest blunders?

Build a Costco on top of the Home Depot, you say? Well, it WOULD be increased density. So to speak. Plus it would free up some additional room for other things. There would have to be some sort of freight elevator arrangement for movement of goods in and out, since everything wouldn't be on ground ...

The TSA tensabarrier issue would be easily fixed also, if they would simply open the serpentine blocked lanes. Maybe that is the airport's job?

Re: Westport

^Back in the 1990s this was a high-end Eurotrash "fashionista" store. Similar to Riccardi in Boston or what Hall's tried to do with "The Bridge." [Something] hardware IIRC was the name -- the project of the son of a nearby retailer who sold fancy imported fixtures and other bath/...

Re: Restaurants you ate out at as a kid

There is a streetcar in the middle of a lot on 7th Street in Strawberry Hill, KCK. In the parking lot, SE corner of 7th and Lowell.

I don't think it's a St. Joe Interurban, probably just a KC streetcar leftover from the 1950s decommissioning. Still, I was surprised to spot it recently.

Re: Affordable Housing

The housing market in KC is transitioning from a demand-side condition into a supply-side condition, to put it in economic terms. STL, Wichita and other "cheap" metros have demand lower than their built environments. Detroit would be similar. There are more houses than people at the modera...

Re: Affordable Housing

^Very true -- several friends are landlords in core KC, and they intend to pass on the increase in property taxes. In many cases, the taxes doubled (like from 2000 to 4000, which still seems low for a half-million-dollar house). Also rents tend to track just below 1% of FMV. Have you seen what you g...

^Hub airports in middle-sized metros like SLC (DL) DEN (UA) and CLT (AA) will always have more traffic than non-hub airports in similar or even larger metros. Hub airports do make it easier to fly nonstop to many places, particularly smaller regional markets. Charlotte is exhibit A. You can fly from...

Another problem is the native population of arachnid mites ("chiggers") which are absolutely aggressive in Swope Park and Penn Valley Park. Even with 20% DEET, they still bite. Somehow I don't get attacked as much at Loose Park. Does their conservancy possibly spray the park? The bug popul...

Re: Companies moving/expanding to KC area

Sorry -- I maintain that Phoenix doesn't currently have any world-class, namebrand corporations (maybe Carvana, a stretch). I know Avnet well -- a NYC relo because certain executives moved to Scottsdale (and because Nelson Rockefeller levelled the radio district downtown for the WTC). Avnet occupies...

Re: Companies moving/expanding to KC area

^ This is the nature of capitalism. The successful small companies get bought by larger companies. StL had Burroughs which became Sperry-Unisys and moved, They also had Ralston-Purina (which itself held lots of smaller acquisitions like Eveready/ Energizer battery) which sold to Nestle. The Big Exce...

Re: Downtown Baseball Stadium

There is an ancient apartment building still occupied in EV around 9th and Holmes (relatively large -- three stories and probably 6 apartments per floor) that must be demolished before the site can be graded. I would use that demolition as the signal that the East Village location is a lock.

Too bad. The bridle on The Scout has been mostly torn off. Statue should be removed to the Nelson for safekeeping and replaced with a fiberglass replica. Good lord. Please report to the Mayor. Was it stolen for the bronze/ copper value? We had a problem like that in an overgrown urban park in Conne...

There are 16 recovery centers in Malibu, California, and the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, CA, is next to the Rancho Mirage Country Club and several others. Having them doesn't appear to have a negative effect. There's also people shitting on the streets in those same areas. California is jus...

I suppose "Greenfield" would not be the right term. I was more thinking non-adaptive reuse, where no "brownfield," or historic structure causing extenuating circumstances requiring subsidies. I almost feel like in some of these scenarios Dev's are just adding apartments that the...

I am really shocked that Southmoreland didn't already have stronger protections against demolition. These are some of the last remainders of what was once the finest (pre-Nichols) neighborhood in KC.

Why can't we just bury the lines? Indeed! One of my peeves. NYC did this in the 1920s. Beverly Hills buried its lines in the 1980s. Mission Hills started, stopped, and then finally just completed the "arterials" in the 2000s. That was a truly painful episode among the many painful "M...

It would be different if the us was really good at rail but we’re not. Italy or Spain will connect half their country for the cost of us going to the airport. The US is really good at rail, if it is built by a freight railway. BNSF or UP or even our local Canadian Pacific - KC Southern railway all ...
