12th and Vine

I only wish I could have seen the corner of 12th and Vine 75 years ago  This is very near the new "piano shaped" park going in at 12th and Paseo.....will anything be done to commemorate the intersection or is the park just going to but up against the sign?

Families living downtown

Why not focus on the close in urban neighborhoods, especially Union Hill, Longfellow, etc. on the near south-east side of downtown? These are areas that could be/are suitable for families of any size, with various types of sturdy old housing and pretty tree-lined streets. Plus, you're close enough t...

outsiders' views of KC.

It also doesn't help that so many KCians know so little about our city and have so little respect for it. That is absolutely something that we need to work on, though I'm not sure exactly how. In StL, as Grid mentioned, there is such a sense of pride and loyalty, though 90% of the people are from a ...

Is the design for Tulsa's new arena the best in the Midwest?

Hey Craka, don't get too angry at me for posting my opinion of this and bumping the thread up, I've gotta do what I've gotta do. Anyway I agree with tk, I really like this design and, thus far at least, I think it's quite a bit more unique than ours and very pretty. I'm impressed Tulsa will b...

Family with 6 kids looking for urban hood to buy house

Check the area roughly bounded by Brookside Blvd. on the west and Troost on the east, from 55th st. south to Meyer. Not sure of the neighborhood names, but there are many nice homes, like the one above, at reasonable prices and quite a few kids. Near Brookside (basically in Brookside in some places)...

Freaking Founders at Union Hill

What was so impressive about it, specifically, may I ask? Union Hill is a great little neighborhood right now, but within the next few years it's really going to take off. They've really made a ton of progress on Gillham Row and Founders, it's great to see

not trying to be overly critical of what may not be an end of the world situation, but I woke up today, hungover and sickly, and was faced with this article and the Royals denial of the DT stadium plan, and I'm upset and a bit worried. Damn you KC! This is the best we can do, even in the midst of a ...

Nelson-Atkins Expansion (YES..white glass is the end result)

I'll have to state again that my own personal verdict remains out until nearer to the completion of this building, but even the supporters here have to admit that it's hilarious how people are in pure disbelief about this being the final look - i.e. "wait a second that just CAN'T be permanent, ...

Nelson-Atkins Expansion (YES..white glass is the end result)

I went and checked out the building today, both the near complete north and far less toegether south 'lenses'. The blue lines are just tape along the edges of the glass, apparently they left some on random spots on the north building (in the pics these are the strange blue lines you can see). The fo...

See we aren't the only city who overestimates crowds

Sorry I guess that really should have been posted in city trip reports ^^^. Anyway I wouldn't call 700,000 people an outright lie, especially considering I missed the actual parade and such, but it does seem a bit excessive. Good times nonetheless.

See we aren't the only city who overestimates crowds

I made it down to Mardi Graas in StL Saturday night and had a blast, though I managed to miss almost all of the real Soulard celebrations (we spent most of our time on the Landing). Certainly plenty of "hoosiers", as Jive so nicely put it. It was a huge party though, downtown traffic was a...

Re: OFFICIAL - Arena construction

does anyone agree that it would make more sense to have the college basketball hall of fame fronting on Oak street, assuming the space is available? It would be great to have large streetfront windows and entrances right up along the sidewalk. I'm afraid the size and function of the arena will hurt ...

well, this may not go over too well, but I'd LOVE to go on an inner city hunting trip, taking out pigeons and crows throughout midtown and downtown with a BB gun or something similar. It would be great fun, and I find these birds to be almost purely a nuisance. It would be nice to hope that with som...

OK, well, I'll agree, for the sake of argument that most KCMO public schools south of the river are in need of help, so on to the topic at hand: the Northeast is so completely underrated. There is simply nowhere else like it in the city, from the mix of people to the architecture and history. Howeve...

Redeveloping the Landing

I really hope this gets off the ground and is more than just a pipe dream. The Landing is a decent location and could become a great little destination shopping center for the area if the right stores were brought in. The social and racial implications behind this are awesome and very real as well. ...

Re: OFFICIAL - Arena construction

oh dear. I will withold ultimate judgement for better renderings, but man, is this the best we can do? It's not bad at all, just not spectacular. I worry that KC is really content to play catch-up with cities like Denver, Indy, etc., rather than look to our own future. The new Mizzou Arena in Columb...

^^^^ this is really, really depressing. What does it take to motivate KCians, to encrouage a sense of pride in this city, to create a thought process that looks forward rather than always, without fail, toward the status quo (in this case, even less, IMO)? I hope that 2005 becomes the turning point ...

Love ain't enough - A Personal Saga

In my (admittedly) uneducated point of view, I'd say think long and hard about going for the condo in 21Ten. If you have a relatively desirable unit, I think you'd be pressed to imagine losing money on it if you choose to sell in the next 5+ years as downtown really begins to take off. As KCP stated...

Visiting KC this week, where should I go??

Thursday - Go to Jilly's on Broadway (roughly 19th and Broadway) and then head to the Empire Room and Velvet Dog, as mentioned above. Jilly's has a great Thurs. dance party, though it's not exactly hip-hop. Westport is another good option, and very close to your hotel. Most bars in Westport stay ope...

yup, Liberty Memorial is definetely open, at least it was last week when I took a couple of friends to the top. $2 per person, not bad at all. Depending on how familiar she is with the area, don't forget Loose Park/Sunset Hills/Ward Parkway and it's beautiful old mansions. As mentioned, Union Hill i...
