Re: 39th St./KU Med development?

They've started bulldozing the west side of State Line north of 39th for site prep on the new building. If I remember correctly, the northernmost section will be used for parking for construction crews. In the middle of the superblock there's one house that appears to be a holdout. I'll be interest...

Re: 39th St./KU Med development?

Wish we could get a dry cleaner, bakery and good salad place and maybe an italian cafe. A big yes to the dry cleaner. As far as bakeries, we've got four places for carryout sweets in a two-block stretch of 39th, not counting Starbucks: Sultan's (which I adore), Smallcakes, Mud Pie, and the replacem...

Re: Bridger's Bottle Shop & Preservation Market

Great happy hour deals (charcuterie for $4, salads/apps for $5, American beer cans for $3). Agreed on what a great deal happy hour is. I had a high-class Harry & David plate (summer sausage, cheese, excellent mustard) and a wonderful smoked old-fashioned for $10. Looking forward to working my w...

Re: wtf is happening to w. 39th?!

Sign in the window of the former Latin Bistro space says Sultan's Bakery coming soon. It's open now. Initial visit reveals very friendly staff (explaining stuff and handing out samples!) and very tasty Middle Eastern pastries. I am a bit concerned about the size of the niche market they're serving,...

Re: Ferguson, Missouri

So now we have all these gun nuts running around restaurants and stores flaunting their weapons to show their love for the Second Amendment, but if a black guy picks up a toy gun, its "HE'S GOT A GUN! SHOOT HIM!" The reason my husband never, ever open carries. (Well, that and it's kind of...

Re: Ferguson, Missouri

It's like Ferguson/County PD is doing everything it can to do exactly the opposite of the right thing at every turn. Yes. I'm amazed by the tone deafness of it all. Even at the start, when the police were "only" meeting the protesters with dogs, I wondered how in the world they thought th...

Re: Austin Texas is Booming

Judging Austin by 6th Street is a little like judging KC by the P&L district. South Congress is more laidback and Ginny's Little Longhorn is a gem, or it was several years ago when I visited. Chicken Shit Bingo on Sunday's if you're still around! My issue with Austin is that there's neat stuff t...

Re: wtf is happening to w. 39th?!

I’ll say it’s frustrating. Given the new liquor store’s selection and resultant clientele, the daily empties on our property have increased in frequency and number (which I’ve kvetched about over in Urban Living). But that’s not my biggest issue. The new store, which is run by the building’s owner, ...

Re: Urban Living Pet Peeves

The trash gets me. For a while someone was leaving an empty tallboy on our wall every single day. This was in addition to the usual cans and airplane bottles of Fireball we find in the hostas. It's gotten better since the liquor store moved two blocks further away -- I guess they can drink and pitch...

Re: 39th St./KU Med development?

The fact that they built a facilities plant at the SW corner of a vibrant 39th & State Line a few years ago shows they have no understanding of how they should relate to their neighbors. Agreed, the plant is ugly and depressing, if necessary. However, from what I could tell from the rendering, ...

Wow cool finds MidtownKid! I like the look of those first buildings today, though obviously I wish they were still colonnades. This is so interesting! I've always thought the 39th and Wyoming property was one of the better-maintained apartment buildings in the neighborhood, but perhaps that wasn't ...

Re: Westport Ale House (Formerly Streetside Records)

After an early dinner at Cucina della Ragazza (love the food, love the space, love everything about it), my crowd thought we might try the Ale House. A drive-by revealed that it was packed to the point of discomfort, at least for our standards. Well then, maybe Ca Va. Nope, packed too. I love to see...

Re: Is Midtown Marketplace one of the city's greatest blunde

in this regard you could consider Midtown Marketplace a loss leader for urbanism I like that. This is just an anecdote from a relative newcomer, but when my husband and I started to look for a house in KC two years ago, things like the Costco and the 39th/State Line development were signals of inve...

Owner appears to be Del Hedgepath. Among his qualities and titles are: nefarious bad club owner, evil landlord, notorious developer, commander of blight for Norman School, etc. I drove by Friday evening. There's a huge amount of work being done to the exterior. Most of the west side of the building...

I did. It was well attended. My friend and I didn't stay much past Vince's presentation, because we were wanting to sit down and eat, but we both felt it was worth our time. I'm looking forward to seeing what else they put together.
