Re: Next Mayor 2019

Sorta perplexed what the hell a current USC grad student is doing on KC planning commission. The last two names also seem unconventional.

When Amazon bought Whole Foods, the HQ remained in Austin, TX. I don’t see a reason why AMC would be different?

Nearly a year between end of construction and actual public operations? Seems awfully long. Wasn’t it more like 6 months for the starter line?

Re: OFFICIAL - Loews Convention Hotel (formerly Hyatt)

Why is it so hard to make a parking garage look nice? Building code requirements coupled with high costs for air handling systems. Code stipulates a certain amount of fresh air moving through the garage at all times, ergo you're limited in how much you can cover up. Fire protection requirements can...

Re: Fantasy Retrofits: Barney Allis Plaza

It’s a horribly rendered video. I suspect the final product would be better than what’s shown. That said, there does seem to be a dearth of amenities for such a Central Park.

Re: Downtown Baseball Stadium

FWIW, sporting designed their stadium with expansion in mind. They can add 8k seats to the east end of the stadium alone.

Here’s a star article from a few years back on it:

I think that's the goal, given the questionable financials and terrible design.

The Venn diagram of people who can afford that for a one bedroom and who are willing to accept the finishes shown, in the name of supposedly being green, seems exceptionally small in KC.

Good god.

Re: OFFICIAL - Loews Convention Hotel (formerly Hyatt)

So which gave us a poor design in this situation? I mean without turning this into a red string mess of interconnections, the main culprit is the city parking requirements and in a distant second place building code egress and fire protection. The parking garage ties into what financiers are dictat...

Re: OFFICIAL - Loews Convention Hotel (formerly Hyatt)

People have every right to complain, but you’ve got to ground it in the realities of A) what the building code dictates; B) what the market/financiers dictate; C) what the required program is; and arguably most importantly D) What the city mandates. People should push developers to be better. The be...

Re: OFFICIAL - Loews Convention Hotel (formerly Hyatt)

In my view it’s a case of “you get what you paid for.” And planned for. The city could have been more robust in its planning for the hotel, but it sat around and had no gameplan when a developer stepped up. The city could have land banked an easier site to develop. They could have modified parking r...

Re: OFFICIAL - Loews Convention Hotel (formerly Hyatt)

I'll take a corner retail space and what the residence inn did at ground level 100 times over what Loews did. Is it perfect? no. Not being unreasonable to ask for better than what Loews gave us. But what in the hell are you talking about? The entire residence inn frontage is a Porte Cochere! I’ve a...

Re: OFFICIAL - Loews Convention Hotel (formerly Hyatt)

I think we're being too cute by half pretending that this: https://goo.gl/maps/XCNweJs8sQKyVMj29 is an exceptionally better pedestrian experience than what you're getting one block west. This block has some glazing from the lobby & tenant which makes it marginally better. Even then, that glazing...

Re: OFFICIAL - Loews Convention Hotel (formerly Hyatt)

I guess I don’t get the fixation on the docks. They take up far less frontage than the garage or even the porte cochere. If you’re afraid of constant deliveries, that seems like more a city ordinance that needs to happen than some fault of the developer or the design team. Honestly as all of downtow...

Re: OFFICIAL - Loews Convention Hotel (formerly Hyatt)

Private alley: as TLG and normal things mentioned, grading doesn’t work if the alley is running E-W. If you’re going to run it N-S then you’re looking at intensive earthwork. IIRC most of what was there was rocky bluff, making it tougher to carve out than most. Dock along Truman: I don’t know KC’s l...

Re: OFFICIAL - Loews Convention Hotel (formerly Hyatt)

Are we totally forgetting the honkey tube, too? I know it's a convention hotel, but the ground-level experience leaves so much to be desired... especially facing the Crossroads (where it sits). I'm sure it will be successful, just like the Downtown Marriott that precedes it. See I’m with TLG on thi...

It's more than reasonable to expect a new article every day for the price he's charging. Heck $6/month gets you multiple new articles per day with the Shawnee Mission Post. Not every article has to be a breaking story. Curbed Chicago already does a good mix of this with realty pieces; maps; guides; ...
