Re: Renovations of apartment buildings along Armour Blvd.

There's a shiny new Hufft Projects sign outside the large apartment building west of the Park Central. So maybe that project will start moving again. I think Mel Solomon's office had the project there before Hufft - does anyone know what happened that it was on hiatus for so long?

Re: Mayor Sly James proposes $1 billion infrastructure plan

Ah, okay I see the issue. In which case, hopefully it simply means that this is focused on the areas that are completely deteriorated past the point-of-no-return as well as fixing the salvageable points. That's what I would like to see, anyway. When MSJ said that, I immediately thought about neighb...

Re: What's it cost to build a house?

Have sort of been in the market for a house/condo/etc. for a little while now. The other day I (literally) ran across a vacant lot for sale in one of my favorite neighborhoods. Which, naturally, led me to start thinking about building rather than buying and to ask: Does anyone have any thoughts, su...

Re: NEW Independence Center tenants

I think KC has a more throw away mentality that most metros because land is so plentiful and cheap and developers get so many tax breaks to build in affluent green fields. Maybe, but I'm not sure our treatment of malls is an example of this. I still think Bannister was a victim of bad siting and fo...

It's probably moldering in the basement of Architectural Salvage.

Unfortunately no mention of its architect, John McKecknie. The Star does a lousy job of mentioning architects.

Re: Troost developments

Are you guys talking about a gay brothel or bathhouse? "manheimen" "sweatlodge" "mustache club" "asshole castle". WTF? The Asshole Castle - and this is only information I've gleaned from the posts on the reliably entertaining HP Neighborhood page on Facebook - is a house in the 4000 block of Troost...

Re: Troost developments

"Quality of life" has nothing to do with it, it's all about economic incentives. "The suburbs don't look like Troost," but the suburbs don't look like Paris either. Suburban development exists not because it necessarily "works" on its own merits but because every level of our government has incenti...

Yeah, I'm not complaining about hospice. I'm complaining about them sticking a parking lot right out in front. I refuse to believe that the argument is between the parking going in the front or hospice patients have a shitty end of life.

Re: St. Lukes' Hospice will build new facility on SW Traffic

Not a big fan of the giant parking lot, but I guess it's better on that side than the park side. Moving parking to the back would be a huge, huge improvement. I was looking at the site last night and it's about 4' above SW Trfy grade. The current building fits well on the site, and while I'm not co...

Re: Troost developments

As much as I want to complain about the design of the shopping center, it's the tenant mix that Gates gets in there that will determine whether this thing had a positive effect on the area or not. Considering that the first tenant into his previous development is a liquor store, I'm not too optimist...

I called the owner and was told they were asking only $35,000. I was also told it needed a new roof and "well, pretty much everything." I don't know if I woke the guy up or what, but he didn't seem too happy that I had called. Well, that's what I get for listening to the neighborhood scuttlebutt. $...

Re: Rankings, lists, and such

Not uncommon for settlers to name new towns after old ones. I had many relatives that made the trek out on the Oregon trail and many that stayed. My last name is a pretty common name in that area. Salem, Portland, Dallas, Albany, Longview, Jefferson City, Lincoln, Jacksonville. All towns in Oregon....

There's a chance the neighborhood will get on the National Register as a district, so a renovation could be in line for historic tax credits.
