Re: Politics

Call it whatever you want. I understand that if anyone pushes back on any criticisms of Trump, they must surely be "insert name". I'm so sick of being insulted any time I try to simply clarify accusations made against him or play devils advocate that I think I'm going to vote for the guy. I think t...

Re: Politics

He's been running for president for 30 years, he definitely wants it, he's not going to just immediately resign and ride off into the sunset. Also, having pulled a naked bait and switch like that would also be a nightmare for Democrats in future elections. Kamala already presented herself as an opti...

Re: COVID19

There is no big mystery here. New York did literally everything differently than all these other states that are spiking now: a real shutdown that people actually observed. For months the streets were dead and the vast majority of those people who were out were wearing masks. Transit ridership and c...

Re: Operation Legend

I feel it would be a good thing for the republican party if Trump doesn't win. They need to reset, kick out some old heads and figure out how to appeal to younger people, women and minorities which will take years of work to do. Without the electoral college, the republican party would never stand ...

Re: COVID19

I'm not blaming Trumps terrible response on impeachment. He response is his own fault for caring more about the stock market than anything else. I'm blaming all of the senate and congress's lack of a timely response on the impeachment trial that they were so obsessed with... both sides. A few repub...

I'm sure that Joe "Republicans are good guys and we can work across the aisle with them" Biden would prosecute Trump and his admin just as vigorously as Obama prosecuted the Bush admin for their myriad crimes and the white collar criminals who tanked the economy

Re: COVID19

We have a very strong tradition of ascribing divergent outcomes between white and minority populations to differences of biology because it washes our hands of any culpability for creating and maintaining the socioeconomic environment in which those divergent outcomes occurred. Could the vitamin D d...

The disease apparently hits black populations at a greater rate. There's a known genetic difference where white people produce more vitamin D naturally With dark skin, need longer exposure to sunlight to get enough D. One report claims light skin people only need about 15 minutes of direct sunlight...

"Dividends are an agreement between an investor and an investment, so they are not a problem." Come again? If dividend payments have left companies with too little cash on hand to weather an economic crisis , then dividends are a problem. You don't have to agree with that, but it's a coherent thoug...

You could substitute any word with either salutory or pejorative connotation in my argument upthread. Introducing slavery is just a strawman, not an argument. It's not a strawman, it's an illustration of a fact that you just unwittingly admitted yourself, that your own argument had no actual substa...

Service isn't "lousy" in Europe (I mean, it can be depending on the restaurant, just like it can be here), it is a cultural difference where you summon the server if you need them rather than having them incessantly nag you about whether there is anything else they can get for you.

Re: Affordable Housing

I think there is something to be said for bringing back some amount of SROs in some of the bigger and more expensive cities, but I reject them as any kind of real answer to the affordable housing crisis. I think cities like New York and San Francisco and DC could definitely use more of them as a for...

Re: Affordable Housing

Homelessness isn't an "attack on cities," homelessness is a result of capitalism's attack on people. Arresting people for being too poor to have a home is insane.

Missouri looks like it will be the first state without a PP clinic
not really, it just couldn't provide abortion services, not all PP locations do abortion services
This might be the worst and most inane "well actually"-style response ever

Right. Some prosecutors in Atlanta have already announced that they aren't going to enforce the new abortion law, but you can expect that the state will still enforce it. I actually have no idea what the laws say about this but I would assume there is probably some kind of mechanism for the governor...

But for her, the problem is less the idea that she'd be surrounded by Republican voters, which obviously wouldn't be true in KC (and she understands that), and more that Republican voters will control the state government, which will in turn control...

Re: Politics

I'm not sure what the procedure is in KS for amending the state constitution, but they elected a Dem governor last fall, so they will presumably have a little bit more trouble changing their abortion laws for the next few years. I think your broader point, that women won't want to live in states tha...
