Re: Layoffs at The Star

Based on the fact The Kansas City Star has elected to completely dismiss their Business desk; I regard the publication as only marginally relevant. HerrFrank brings up a good point: Palm Beach Post (which I read when I am at the Delray house) is neighborhood-centric. They have an editorial desk for ...

Re: Crown Center: urban disaster, shining star, or in-between

I would think CCRC would have controlling interest of the land immediately south/southeast of the Santa Fe and SFO tower complex. Moreover, the amenities would remain "centrally located" to any further development. One must question whether the streetcar extension would enhance the desirability of t...

Re: Crown Center: urban disaster, shining star, or in-between

Crown Center was a creation of the times. 1970's were a dangerous time; post "King Riots". The "street-scape" comment is spot-on. CC integrated a safe residential section, multi-tenant office use, retail, entertainment, a huge hospitality component; plus their HQ. Importantly; through the 1990's Cro...

Re: Crown Center: urban disaster, shining star, or in-between

That picture bears a slight resemblance to the model in the lobby. The lobby model did have more office components on the south edge (where 2555 Grand is currently situated.) The model was done in-relief; accentuating the old "signboard hill". The biggest shame: They could have had a built-in client...

Re: Crown Center: urban disaster, shining star, or in-between

Do any of you folks have a picture of the diorama that was once sited in the Crown Center -- near that "Streetcar named Desire" restaurant? The Diorama was probably 25' long and 15' in width. It detailed the initial build-out of CC, plus the subsequent phases; including the residential components. I...

Re: Cambria Hotel(SW Corner of 9th & Wyandotte)

There was a streetcar there. When I get back to my NJ home; I'll have to go to my library and give you the name of the old KC Streetcar book.. I bought it in the late 1980's or early 1990's. I'll go back there tomorrow. A Splendid Ride: https://www.amazon.com/Splendid-Ride-Streetcars-Kansas-1870-19...

The new hotel looks handsome there. It'll complement the skyline nicely when illuminated.

Re: Crown Center: urban disaster, shining star, or in-between

Earthling: that is an interesting data point. That is, Alameda, Parkway, etc charge commensurate HOA fees, yet hold their property values.

Re: Crown Center: urban disaster, shining star, or in-between

HerrFrank, your statement is spot-on: In NYC, a doorman was a necessary convenience; as that person was the "passive guard". The sidewalk is a public space. Your W. 58th place: Nice touch that they'd take deliveries. Crown Center? Hardly the foot traffic.. It would be hard to justify a staff of 2-4 ...

Re: Crown Center: urban disaster, shining star, or in-between

I kinda-sorta agree. Depends on the services. For example, a subject property in S. Fl has a HOA fee of $720/mo - 3-bed/3-bath townhome on the water in Delray Beach area, two garages in the house, two outdoor spaces. What does one get for it? Landscape (impeccable)-fresh limes for Gin and Tonic. Cab...

Re: Crown Center: urban disaster, shining star, or in-between

HerrFrank; do you know, based on your HOA financial statement, what aspects of San Francisco are driving the HOA costs?? Elevators? Structured Parking? Other special fees? Since you reported your story this morning; I did look at "Zillow" listings, with associated HOAs. Even by South Florida standar...

Re: Crown Center: urban disaster, shining star, or in-between

I was looking at the penthouse in SF Tower a few years ago. Amazing space, huge deck overlooking DT and Liberty Memorial. Modern kitchen. Started at $1.5m and literally got down to $50k. Confused until I saw that the HOA fees were $10k/month. >> These HOA fees are comparable to those paid by folks ...

Cordish IS justified to complain. Copaken Brooks is capitalizing on the success of the Cordish investment. Copaken Brooks had been sitting on their hands regarding 13th and Grand, a property they control and s completely unencumbered. Instead, the chose to build withing the periphery of Power and Li...

Re: OFFICIAL - 46 Penn Centre

You nailed it. I travel often. Even in suburban areas; I find I pay for parking at hotels/etc. The Plaza always offered free parking to compete with their suburban counterparts. Perhaps they should consider a validation program; "Purchase over $xx yields free parking with validation from the retaile...

Had to chime in. The Food Truck suggestion. Given a guy who had invested in upgrades to restaurant/commercial space for a food venue versus a food truck; consider throwing support to the fellow who had made the investment into the property (driving development) AND local employment/taxes/streetscape...

The YouTube video is VERY flattering to KC. The hotel and residential additions filled the downtown nicely.

..From a guy who looks at the NYC skyline every weekend.

As an aside, the Wilkerson people are rather busy lately: https://app.oxblue.com/open/blockllc/46penn
