Re: Rankings, lists, and such

i've said this elsewhere, but my main beef with STL is that the very real "cool factor" and abundant charm seems relatively outweighed by the "pain in the ass factor" of relatively bad traffic and attitude compared to KC or other cities. some cities are so cool and exciting it's worth an increase i...

Re: Rankings, lists, and such

while i agree 100% with the idea of STL seeming "closed-off" and KC seeming comparatively "open," i really have no idea why i have this impression. what accounts for this? i think STL is cursed (and i guess also blessed) by having a very large urban core. it's so large, and it emptied out so much, t...

Re: We are getting a new airport!!!

i've been to maybe 40 airports and, to be honest, other than LAX and DIA, i am not sure i can picture in my mind the exterior of any one of them. i can picture aspects of the interior of a few airports in my mind, but not b/c of striking design--mostly b/c of some bad memory of being delayed and bei...

Re: We are getting a new airport!!!

i think it looks pretty sharp. i like the transparency of the terminal and the exterior and interior wood. i'm guessing the fountain will look better in person as well. it's not going to be an iconic building by any stretch of the imagination, but i dig it.

Re: STL MLS proposal resurrection

Obviously western Wyco is not a good location for anything, but I am not sure we would want an MLS stadium downtown. Maybe somewhere downtown-adjacent, like the W or E Bottoms, or even NKC.

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)

at the risk of sounding like a cranky kansas city star website commenter: i'm legitimately curious if there are other upscale shopping districts in the U.S., which command some of the highest rents in their respective regions, which see the level of crime and mischief of the plaza? the shooting of 4...

Stop your Costco/Whole Foods/TJ runs, downtowners! Use it or lose it!
Is Cosentino's downtown on the ropes?

Re: Property Tax Assessments 2019

Steve52, most everyone that lives in the Plaza/Brookside area "got away with" lower increases because we already were assessed at near market value, which means we have been carrying the weight for everyone that was assessed well below market value. this was my impression as well. i feel a lot of s...

Re: Property Tax Assessments 2019

We did not appeal. Our assessment in Morningside went up around 8%. Sucked but it's still valued around 50K less than we paid for the house 2 years ago. I worry that if we appealed JaxCo would actually INCREASE our assessment.

We were recently in Bordeaux and their tram/streetcar looks a lot like ours. Pretty interesting to see it at work in a dense European city!

illinois legalized full recreational use and sale, including the metro east of st. louis. not sure how that will influence missouri, yet. When does this go into effect--i.e. when will recreational sales begin there?

Re: Westport

unfortunately, shootouts are not really that unusual in midtown or other parts of the city. the number of bullets apparently involved here is perhaps a bit unusual but, if no one was actually shot, i am not sure it would be newsworthy. when we lived in HP, during warm weather it was not uncommon at ...

I have a Jolie sign in my yard and plan to vote for her, but embarrassingly I do not really know how I would differentiate her from Quinton (who I also like). much of midtown remains dominated by single-family houses, so depending where your exact house or apt is, your experience of midtown could be very "walkable" or not at all. we used to live in S. Hyde Park around 44th and Campbell. not exactly bustling and walkable to anything too exciting--but we co...

I would like to plug Notre Dame de Sion for its new(ish) Petite program, as well as Montessori Pre-K. Both at the Hyde Park lower school campus. Great community and seemingly a little under-the-radar due to the relative newness of the program. Sion is co-ed from Petite through 8th grade. Since our ...
