Re: Studio brings movie magic to River Market
That is what I am hoping for. The city will have a premier filming and editing company in the core of downtown. Fantastic! And if they ever needed an outside shot with the backdrop of a city scene, they've got River Market and the downtown skyline right out their front door. Ever notice that those...

Re: Breaking News
Just a quick reminder that a year or two ago, Jacksonville, Flordia held the Super Bowl. That is a city with a metro population sized somewhere between Omaha & Oklahoma City. Somehow they held a Super Bowl. KC is bigger than Jacksonville, so one would conclude we would be a little better equip...

Re: Times Square...KC Style?...
Funny, I've been thinking about video signs in that area of the loop for a while. It's probably because just one block north of the parking garage proposed as a location here, the street grid resembled our version of Times Square. For those unaware, Delaware met Main Street at 9th, forming a triang...

For more on this subject, check out this month's issue of Business 2.0. They have a big spread on the real estate boom and where some economists think it will go over the next twenty years. Of interest here, they predict the formation of 10 "megapolitans" in the US that will absorb a 70 ...

Re: BMA Building To Be Converted To Condos
Yes, I've said before that townhomes on that spot would be fine. But I'd like a little less Prairie Villiage and a little more Crossroads or Gillham Row to it. They don't have to be white International Style cubes, but lets get something that looks like it belongs in the urban core.

Re: BMA Building To Be Converted To Condos
Well, I have two thoughts here. 1) I'm glad they plan to build these townhomes around the base of "One Park Place." It brings more people onto that hilltop who can enjoy Penn Valley Park. 2) While not hideous, I'd prefer a design style that was a bit less suburban. Comandante hit it on ...

Re: Downtown Baseball Stadium News Conference
I'm trying to get a sense of the direction it is facing based on the picture, but I'm having a hard time with it. Â Isn't that the Doubletree/Radisson on the left side of the skyline? Â And why is City Center Square to the right of One KC Place and Transamerica? Â Either somebody give me a little d...

Re: OFFICIAL - Performing Arts Center construction
Actually, bearing in mind that streetscaping improvements are needed and are on the drawing boards, I rather enjoy some of the downtown KC streetscapes as seen from the pedestrian view. Baltimore Avenue provides two great views, looking north from the P&L Building and looking south from from the...

Re: The Star: Pull Union Station out of mediocrity
Absolutely, lets grow this rail exhibit. Somebody hit the nail on the head, though; we need some of the old tracks back. This will help, as will the IRS and the Postal Service. My issue is that all this is turning a railroad station into kind of a big mall. I think the exhibit holds the key to en...

Yes, this is a delicate situation, isn't it. New Orleans has lost it's main sports facilities, along with most other things, and we happen to have two functional arenas with a third state-of-the-art one on the way. How does the city come off as offering help and not as vultures? Based on news report...

Re: Mad at Gov't Response to Kat.?
Yes, honestly, do you really think that what color a person's skin is or how much money they make per year is REALLY all that important to rescue workers, the military, and the government right now? Do you really buy all this garbage about FEMA and the President are purposely slowing resources beca...

Re: Huricane Katrina
Yes, we've all heard the concerns for years about what might happen if New Orleans took a hit this bad. It sounded like the levees would actually turn the city into a sort of toxic bathtub when its all over. I'd have to agree with Commandante Cero here; there are some places on this earth that God ...

Also, just a minor observation. We seem to put a lot on these "young, liberal-minded artists and creative types." I just want to interject that cities are made up of all types of people. Everyone shapes a city; not just the "young, liberal-minded artists," young single profess...

Re: OFFICIAL: East Village downtown neighborhood
I realize the thread has turned towards what to do with homeless people (for which I have no answer), but I just wanted to ask KCDevin and some of the others why they are opposed to having a high rise hotel bookending the east side of the P&L District? I brought up the high rise hotel idea when...

Re: OFFICIAL: East Village downtown neighborhood
If I'm not mistaken, Grid, KCDevin mentioned a high-rise hotel on that thread he did about future KC skyscrapers a few weeks ago. Perhaps that future hotel could go on that site. I've driven past it dozens of times, and I'm with you; it needs to be filled by something dense and tall. Between AT&am...

Re: SEATTLE, wow...what a town!
macnw, I totally agree with you on the snow/cold vs rain/cold. I'm originally from Milwaukee, so I've always seen snow as more of a seasonal feature attraction than a nuisance. It's not winter without at least a little snow. You can get out and have fun in the snow. Cold rain is the most energy-s...

but these cities also get a lot of positive exposure. (ever start a response and hit the "Post" button before you finish?!!!) Of course, Detroit has been in a number of movies recently, but the image reinforced common stereotypes as a place you don't want to visit. As Eddie Murphy ...

Shinatoo, I like "Cherry Hill," "Cherry Flats", "Admiral Plaza," and "Admiral Hill." "Smarts Hill," as someone else mentioned, wouldn't be bad either. Those sound kind of elegant, and I've never heard of another city with a suburb or district of a ...

Re: SEATTLE, wow...what a town!
I like the quasi-futuristic mono rail. Does anyone know how well it is used by Seattle residents? And how much did it cost to build? I'm sure it was probably more expensive to put in than those streetcars I see in the pictures, but I'd love to have a monorail in KC. It would be a great way to bri...

Re: Most Desirable Places to Live
That is a theory of mine; that a person's desire to live in a certain place today is influenced as much by media-produced image as it is by actual quality of life and cost of living. What cities do you see most often represented in television and movies? New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, W...
