Re: Misc Crossroads News

No different than people who bitch about having to park a block or two away in a downtown but think nothing of walking that far or more to get from their parking space to a store inside a mall. OMG, burn a calorie... you probably need to... I take a 2 mile downtown lunch walk when I can. Sheesh! I ...

Yes. Many roads are now nice and smooth. But unemployment is still high.

Re: Taxes as disincentive to working harder?

re: the danes:  not surprising.  but there doesnt seem to be any huge opposition to it, or you would have been able to find much more recent articles containing much more broad-reaching data. Ah, I see. Your recent travel show provides a much more accurate picture than my three-year-old NYT article...

he asked his cousin to discuss why norwegians were seemingly okay with paying such high income tax rates - in this case, the woman said she pays approximately 50% in income taxes. Re: Taxes as disincentive to working harder?

i am not well-versed enough in history and economics to pinpoint precisely when our government stopped aiding the working person I wasn't aware that it stopped. EITC, Pell grants, Making Work Pay, TANF, Medicaid, Child Care Credit, American Opportunity Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit are exampl...

Re: Taxes as disincentive to working harder?

but wait a sec, those wealthy folks are "job creators!"  they provide the slovenly masses with good jobs!   I thought the government wields that power. For example, Pelosi said that health care reform "is about jobs. In its life, it will create 4 million jobs, 400,000 jobs almost imm...

Re: Taxes as disincentive to working harder?

for a huge portion of this country, concerns about paying for health care, education, retirement, etc. cause tremendous anxiety and stress.  so why aren't people clamoring for a similar tax rate - and, of course, a similarly high expectation (and performance) from govt? You answered your own questi...

Re: Taxes as disincentive to working harder?

i think the "taxes reward laziness" argument you made is completely false, and now it appears you are backing away from it.   Where did I make that argument? is it that we've officially turned a corner where americans are 100% individualistic and do not have a "we're all in it togeth...

Re: Taxes as disincentive to working harder?

Also, can someone clarify for me, if you pay x% for the first 250k of net taxable income and you make 255k, you only pay the higher rate on the 5k.  Is this correct? Correct. Hence my analogy that it's like working overtime for a lower rate. And keep in mind that depending on the bracket, not only ...

Re: The Medium Chill - Is Our Generation Less Ambitious? And is that good?

I definitely think there are a lot of working class people in lots of other cultures that are much more ambitious than I and many other middle class Americans. Agreed. In fact, despite all of the whining about the rich-poor gap, decreasing upward mobility, the jackboot of The Man, etc., millions of...

Taxes as disincentive to working harder?

One way some business owners and sole proprietors get over the hump is by buying a lot of deductible equipment, such as a new ______ every year. The catch is that although doing so increases your deductions, the benefit is not 1:1 in the sense that every $1 spent doesn't reduce your tax liability by...

Taxes as disincentive to working harder?

I think as a businessman you need to learn how to "work" the tax code and quit obsessing about writing a check. I have an accountant a major firm advising me. But there's only so much that can be done within the laws. I still have to write a check for $5,000+ to the feds every quarter and...

Taxes as disincentive to working harder?

tax burden is as low as its ever been. generationally speaking, your argument doesn't make sense. I'm self-employed. When I'm deciding how much to work, I don't focus on how my taxes compare to previous generations. Such comparisons are meaningless when it's time to write the checks to the state an...
