Re: KC Chronicles Photo Thread
Where is the "Reservoir at the Concourse"? It's scary looking. It's actually "Reservoir at North Terrace Park". Wabash @ St. John will put you in sight of it. In my view, a beautiful relic. Thanks, Loftguy. I just now found this interesting article: http://northeastnews.net/page...

Re: The Story of the Katz Brothers drug store empire
No photos of either 7th & Minnesota or 10th & Minnesota stores, but talks about how they were prototypes for self service stores. Katz brothers were like early Sam Waltons in their retail approach. Loved the story about Elvis (unknown at the time) singing at the Memphis store opening and th...

I know I can buy it- I was just curious if it had any KCK pictures in it. Thanks, though.FangKC wrote:The Kansas City Public Library has it now, and you can get it from the Kansas City Store.

Anybody got this book yet? I'm curious if it has any pics of the Kansas City, Kansas stores, particularly the one on Minnesota Avenue.

Re: Modern Archeology
Apologies if this is common knowledge, but I just came across this site. Old aerial photos of Kansas City here: http://www.historicaerials.com/ You can see 1959, and then toggle other dates to see the changes. 1959 is a little murky, but it's alot of fun. A couple of things I've found are the drive-...

His nearest competitor fell off his flagpole?? How high up was he, did he die, was he tethered? So many questions that will never have an answer.shinatoo wrote: http://www.distant.ca/UselessFacts/fact.asp?ID=166
I'm guessing it was something akin to this.

Cadle Avenue, KCK
Hi all, I just received a 1901 map of Kansas City, and was puzzled to see what is today Minnesota Avenue labeled as "Cadle Avenue". Anybody ever heard of that? FWIW, it's a Rand McNally page from an atlas. I was disappointed to see it didn't go west enough to cover my old neighborhood, but...

What/where was this motel?
The description, from memory but I think it's accurate: just south of downtown, south side of the (east to west)street, on a hill? Had an indoor swimming pool. It was already looking a bit shabby in the mid 70s.
Thanks!
Thanks!

I don't understand how the water affects the bridge piers. Don't they go all the way down to bedrock, which (hopefully) couldn't just be washed away like a regular bank?aknowledgeableperson wrote: The issue is the damage done to items such as bridge piers that are in the water.

Re: Modern Archeology
Interesting interview, but I'm puzzled by his saying that "the lake is at the center of the city's black community and has been since Cole moved to Kansas City, Kansas, in 1939." I lived in KCK until 1965 and never saw any blacks in that area and, believe me, I would have noticed and hea...

Back in the dark ages, when I was growing up, we used to ice skate on Big Eleven. We read the Kansas City Kansan daily, waiting for the announcement that it had frozen hard enough. We always went at night and there would be a fire in a barrel to warm us up. It was always something to look forwar...

There are several small but abandoned staircases on Pennsylvania between 12th and 13th. Both sides of the road. The ones on the east side are taller than on the west side of the street, but they all lead up to empty lots. They're actually pretty interesting for itty bitty ones. I checked those o...

Did you actually climb any of those longer staircases? A video with some atmospheric music would be cool- those are some mysterious looking structures what with the jungle over growing them. More, please.

Fascinating, as always. I wonder how the property ownership has ended up now that these right-of-ways are long abandoned. I'm guessing that wedge building still has a zero lot line triangle parcel as a remnant of being there. I've recently embarked on finding and documenting all kinds of disused st...

I love this stuff and I love exploring KCK, so please keep it coming. Are there any remnants of this railroad right of way left? I realized that the area between Quindaro/Brown and Parallel is one that I've missed most of during my explorations, so I'm especially curious about finding interesting s...

I'm glad they were able to repurpose the building- judging by a Google driveby it was looking pretty rough:
