Re: 1003 Walnut
The parcel where the Myron Green Cafeteria stood wasn't added to Oppenheim Brothers Park. It became a small surface lot for the WallStreet Tower. https://kcrag.com/viewtopic.php?p=301269#p301269 https://kcrag.com/viewtopic.php?p=351644#p351644 https://www.google.com/maps/@39.1005474,-94.5820331,3a,...

Re: On-going downtown development projects
I think retail is a surprisingly vital element for consistent pedestrian activity. The Plaza is still the busiest I’ve ever seen anywhere in KC on random, non-event days. Downtown has added lots of residents and restaurants and such, but it seems like KC pedestrians only really come out when there’...

Re: 1003 Walnut
Kinda sad that it wouldn't seem absurd to imagine someone would float a proposal to demolish this for parking, already adjacent to more parking. Maybe that era is finally slowing, however, in Kansas City's downtown. The old Myron Green Cafeteria building on the 1100 block of Walnut sat vacant for ma...

Re: On-going downtown development projects
An evergreen question for Downtown Kansas City will remain: whatever the population of residents and/or workers there rises to, where will the retail that so many would like to see eventually take root there again go if there was sufficient willingness to invest in retail there? What existing proper...

https://theatreposts.files.wordpress.com/2014/10/img435_pe.jpg I had to post it; it was all the blade sign talk earlier. Never tire of these kinds of photos. Main looking north from 12th; probably 1958 based on the fresh asphalt covering the trolley tracks. If there’s random old photo thread I shou...

Re: Amenities missing from downtown
The 10th and Main CVS has been a drugstore for the building’s entire existence: Katz, later Skaggs, still later Osco, and then CVS. Above it, and what has certainly saved it from demolition in a location where literally every other old building was demolished immediately around it, was that the uppe...

Re: Is Midtown Marketplace one of the city's greatest blunders?
Fang, if they are going to move Costco 1000', they may as well build it on top the home depot. Build a Costco on top of the Home Depot, you say? Well, it WOULD be increased density. So to speak. Plus it would free up some additional room for other things. There would have to be some sort of freight...

Re: Katz on Main
Love that they, at least in the renderings, plan to revive the old Katz logo. I wonder if they’d have to make a deal to use it with the Katz family, many of whom still live in the KC area.

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)
Is KC too small to support 2 areas that have the upscale chains and high rents? When downtown was viable for large scale retail, it shared high end retail with the Plaza for years, though there was more of it downtown (at least before ca 1965) and certainly the overall downtown retail and service b...

Re: Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception building new parish center
I wish some rich Catholic donor would eventually help fund/finance a second senior residential tower on that parking lot that will be fronting Broadway and 12th Street. Not an impossibility. Certainly would be a market for it. I think ultimately a project for residential involving parking within it...

Re: City Hall Replacement
City Hall is as much a landmark as other notable city halls of a similar vintage, like the Los Angeles City Hall. It’s not going anywhere. It would be costly to do a full renovation but perhaps the current issues will create a momentum to finally take it all on. I hope so. Same said about BOE thoug...

Fred Herzog's photo of a Vancouver street with blade signs. https://i.imgur.com/2Ich9rH.jpg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Herzog I wonder if anyone in those days realized how cool all of that was and that it would be gone someday. I always wish I could jump into photos like that and walk aroun...

Re: Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception building new parish center
Very attractive renderings.
I wish the near 20-year old renovation of the interior of the cathedral had gone full traditional in undoing the first wreckovation.

Re: 10th and Main Southwest Corner (former transit center)
well you have a chicken and the egg type argument. When the weather is nice almost everyone is outside not using them. In most cases people don't use them because they are not 100% familiar where they go and what they connect. They get the most use during rain and extreme cold. Sometimes extreme he...

Re: 10th and Main Southwest Corner (former transit center)
as someone who has used those skywalks to get to places to eat lunch from my office at Commerce, they are very handy when it is super cold, raining, or hotter than hell. We could certainly get by without them but there is a convenience factor and they do get used. Your point makes total sense to me...

Re: Power and Light District Official Tenant List
Worth noting that it is precisely the rapid decimation of the buildings downtown that once housed and could again house, retail, that Target will have to get mighty creative to have a store in the loop itself without going somewhere in the P&L District. We won't get to see headlines like these,...

Re: Plaza move-ins (ongoing)
If the Plaza's reputation as a high end retail center is on the rocks (and I'm just inferring from people's posts since I long ago moved away), then shouldn't Downtown Kansas City find ways to rejuvenate itself as a retail destination, and especially vying for unique high end retail that might draw ...
