Re: Martini Corner near 31st/Gilham

There is an item on the upcoming CPC Docket (although it looks like it is being continued) for a new parking lot to be built for KCPT just south of the tower (where they recently demolished a decent looking brick apartment building). My only hope for this is that it would allow them to sell their l...

Re: COVID19

Empty Prague today usually one of the most transit-heavy, pedestrian cities in Europe. https://www.rferl.org/a/prague-lockdown-tightens-over-coronavirus-fears-face-masks-covid-19/30492794.html?fbclid=IwAR0weOGSodXB1FxS2RZWnNg9erd01pzRQiUUe0O3U7xGL-RMk281tB2g5M0 We were in Berlin until Sunday. Re: Martini Corner near 31st/Gilham

I believe that block of Oak has only ever had parking on one side of the street. They just switched it to the other side.

Re: Martini Corner near 31st/Gilham

Does anyone know what the plans are for that building? (the former mattress place on the south side of 31st and Oak) Glad to see something/anything happening there, but would love to know what it is.

Re: Various restaurants coming to City

Phew, good beer advice and glad to hear I'm not crazy about prices. I do worry about overpriced blandness accompanying the "hotel market business." I don't mind a some convenient utilitarian places nearby, but not at a "tourist premium." I just wish more affordable options were genuinely walkable to...

Re: Various restaurants coming to City

Wow, really? For me $5-7 reasonable for a full pint of decent craft beer (and I know I've had a Tank 7 for less then $9 elsewhere; you never get a full pint of course.) I guess I'm going to have to start asking for beer pricing before I order anything these days. I mean I like beer but I don't like ...

Re: Various restaurants coming to City

We went to Streetcar Grille after a show and at first I was glad they were still serving food (sometimes tricky later) which seemed decent and reasonably priced, but my Tank 7 served in the typical small tulip glass was a nasty surprise at $9. (Draft beer prices were not listed...I mean it's a basic...

Re: Misc Crossroads News

Before this discussion goes any farther, you all might want to read the article. https://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/ ... -move.html Obviously, the primary motivator was lack of space in the building for a growing company, not parking, though parking was of course a factor and is always a cost. I...

Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC

The pedestrian experience matters when encouraging transit use. We do not walk "as the crow flies" direct to a destination. The hill of course and street patterns limit where Union Hill residents can access any possible stops on Main. These access points include 30th (most desirable) or 31st at the ...

Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC

To be fair, it's not just about my personal investment. I think the Linwood stop has far less potential for the kind of development that is likely to attract pedestrians than 31st. As much as I hope for improvement there, if we think Linwood is going to easily become some kind of utopian new urban v...

Re: Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC

The current suggested stops move both current Union Hill transit stops far out of the neighborhood (29th to 27th and 31st to Linwood.) Not to mention the loss of opportunity/momentum to reinvent 31st Street as a more desirable for pedestrians, something many of us have hoped. It's a double whammy fo...

Re: Brookside

I lived for 15 years in the "East of Oak" section of Brookside north of 63rd and I can assure you every one of my neighbors, (including one who had lived there since the 1950s) call their neighborhood Brookside, though technically it is called "Western 49-63" It's always been slightly more affordabl...

Re: Ward Parkway Center

I've been shocked at the number of people who somehow think it's a "black mall"  I'm white and its been my mall since moving to Brookside, despite the seriously limited clothing selection in the Dillards there; its like they purposely catered only to aging conservative Leawood residents and not enou...

Re: OFFICIAL - Performing Arts Center construction

At least these particular people were interested/curious enough to stop and ask.  A structure as impressive and prominent as this is meant to get the attention of the unaware, which should in turn should help the prominence of the local cultural organizations who are the primary tenants.  A building...

Re: Shipping Container Home in Brookside

Thanks for posting this.  I live a few blocks from there, but had not been by yet to see what they were doing. In truth, our little plat, while predominantly smaller craftsman style airplane bungalows from the 1920s,  is quite a bit quirkier than some of the areas around it, (even within a few block...

Re: Kansas City Star -- another round of layoffs

The fact is, according to all reliable sources and statistics I have seen lately, the Star does NOT have a problem with subscribers or revenue from subscriptions.  The money in newspapers has been in advertising, and that has declined precipitously, thus the layoffs, etc.  A lot of it has to do with...

Re: KC STAR Layoffs?

I certainly hope it is not true.  I am not inclined to be a portender of doom.  I simply can't figure why someone on that level would be inclined to suggest such a thing to my friend unless it had some element of truth.  There seemed to be the suggestion that the KC Star was in fact not producing th...

Re: KC STAR Layoffs?

I am mostly a lurker here, but I just heard some disturbing news form a close associate who knows someone EXTREMELY reputable with significant connections to a lot of important people at McClatchy. First, another round of massive layoffs at the KC Star are planned for this week and may be announced ...
