Re: Tornado tower resurfaces

Until I saw the link, I was thinking that was next to the new Soccer Stadium at the speedway.  Interesting concept, though ugly.  If you could add some grace (like the Eifel Tower) to that structure (and get rid of the red), that might be doable, particularly around the Speedway or the Soccer Stadium.

Re: OFFICIAL: The Legends at Village West

i'm sure there's a plan somewhere to tear it down and start over. What is being discussed in the Olathe comprehensive plan is keeping the shells of the anchor stores and demolishing the in-between areas of the mall to create an open pedestrian shopping area like the Legends.  I would rather they ke...

Re: What's being built in Olathe

That's it exactly - downtown is a ghost town when the sun goes down (sorry couldn't resist that). They really want to come up with a concept that keeps the town center alive at night, and they have been struggling since before I moved to Olathe (14 years now) to make the downtown a destination.  The...

Re: What's being built in Olathe

Valcour, any idea what kind of "River Market" building they hope to construct? Well they pretty much just have a conceptual plan right now, so nothing is guaranteed.  The concept is a large, open building with permanent stall-type business sites around the outer wall - like the permanent ...

Re: What's being built in Olathe

So Olathe actually has a downtown.  It's where they keep the jail, and government buildings.  Apparently, at some point, the city plans to spruce it up a bit. http://www.olatheks.org/Development/Downtown/Envision Yeah, they have been working on that for years.  That is why the city bought up Alexan...

Re: Kansas drops the ball...

Gotta play the game.  Dallas, Atlanta, Denver etc have been doing it for years and it's paid off. Kansas and Missouri both need to take economic development more seriously, especially in a city like KC that gets few chances to compete for major office or industrial projects that choose places like ...

Re: Does Olathe Have a Soul?

If I understand what is meant by the "soul" of a city then the soul of Olathe is the backyard.  The definition of soul running through this thread seems to be the architectural element or environment that characterizes the city.  For Olathe and most other suburbs, that architectural elemen...

Repurposing "Ghost Boxes"

Interesting article on the Popular Mechanics site of taking vacant retail sites and repurposing them.  One example they cite is taking an abandoned mall and making it into a city center.

Re: Olathe Great Center

There was a good article in the KC Business Journal on this sale - sorry I didn't think to get a link and the article has disappeared.  The mall cost over $120 million to build and the investment group bought it for around $20 million.  That's a nice markdown, and the investment group believes they ...

Re: Olathe Great Center

Actually there is a church in the mall. It is just not a megachurch - it's a start up church.  Which means the rent can't be very high for that mall apace. If they clean up the decor; sign at least one major vendor; and add some events that make sense, there is no reason why that mall couldn't turn ...

This has happened - Church's is open at the old Backyard Burger site (just east of I-35 on Santa Fe/135th Street.  Picked up some chicken there the other night, and it was pretty good.

Re: MU bioscience park in Blue Springs

Why didn’t the Olathe project go to KCK, that city is about half open land. I don’t care about the Olathe project.  I never said a thing about it.  It was nice to see something going into a JoCo business park that didn’t come from KCMO.  Hell, most of the companies that now sit on Renner, College a...

Church's!  Yea!  Good to see we finally got one back on the Kansas side.  Crunchy, greasy, salty artery-clogging yumminess. I know it isn't the greatest chicken in the world, but for some odd reason its been my favorite ever since I was a little kid getting it with my dad at the walk-up window on 2...

Re: Big Business's coming to Olathe

It's a spec office building development just south of the Corporate Ridge business park (Farmers Insurance, Terracon, Garmin and Embassy Suites are coming).  It is for four buildings and over 420,000 sq ft.  It's on spec, so no tenants have been identified yet.  It should fit in well with the Corpor...

Gotta love the one that started the mom n pop Mexican explosion in Olathe too - Chapala!

Chapala is good too - used to go there all the time.  I am just addicted to the Pollo Poblano at Mi Ranchito, so I tend to go there when I feel like Mexican food.
