I wish every building kept a few units for STR for tenant's visitors. I also would have loved to try out buildings for a night or 2 before singing a big lease.

Re: OFFICIAL - Flashcube (720 Main)
there's pros and cons. same ownership group cut a deal with some airbnb outfit to lease out a bunch of the 909 walnut units. apparently there was a failure to audit the airbnb keys and someone never returned one and used it to loot a dozen of the storage units in the basement. there's also a police report filed by one of the commercial tenants connected to the same incident. all this could have been easily avoided. hopefully they take some care implementing the systems at flashcube.

Why would anyone want to tear down a newly renovated building?beautyfromashes wrote: ↑Thu Mar 04, 2021 12:50 am Flashcube: Only building I wouldn’t mind if it was torn down.

Does it matter? Isn't our goal to reduce waste by not tearing down buildings and the associated loss in income, increase greenhouse gasses and all that?beautyfromashes wrote: ↑Thu Mar 04, 2021 9:37 amYou haven’t seen it, huh?flyingember wrote: ↑Thu Mar 04, 2021 9:27 amWhy would anyone want to tear down a newly renovated building?beautyfromashes wrote: ↑Thu Mar 04, 2021 12:50 am Flashcube: Only building I wouldn’t mind if it was torn down.

Built on the streetcar line, still got incentives and looks terrible. Lots of money spent in a prime location for a terrible product. Just an opinion.flyingember wrote: ↑Thu Mar 04, 2021 10:11 am Does it matter? It was completed in 1974. The streetcar was long gone by then.beautyfromashes wrote: ↑Thu Mar 04, 2021 10:57 amBuilt on the streetcar line, still got incentives and looks terrible. It is more that you're being unnecessarily pedantic. It's obvious the poster meant the completion of the rehabilitation in his post.flyingember wrote: ↑Thu Mar 04, 2021 2:49 pmA lazy reply doesn't make it not true.smh wrote: ↑Thu Mar 04, 2021 12:57 pmokflyingember wrote: ↑Thu Mar 04, 2021 11:15 am

Why would they use incentives to change the exterior design (they put in new glass) if the goal is to preserve the Mid-Century Modern design. There's demands for more Historic Preservation Tax credits, not fewer, and they practically require not making arbitrary aesthetic changes.
Destroying architecture of the past because of personal aesthetic preferences goes against every principal of good urban planning. If that's pedantic then this entire board is a celebration of pedantry. And ignoring that fact with non-responses to try and get attention because you don't have a real argument against the post is childish.
To argue that it should be changed simply because the streetcar is also an extremely lazy argument. If this building was five blocks west would it be acceptable to keep it as is?

I’ll be anxious to hear how you like it.
The last place I lived went all in on short term stays and rentals like this to the point I went insane. It was a big reason I decided to move.
I’d be careful getting back into that mess again.

I’m definitely in agreement with Ember on this. Simply because something doesn’t fit your idea of what is aesthetically pleasing hardly means it should be torn down. That line of thought is what brought us the atrocious policies that accompanied urban renewal, and the loss of so much of the historic core of many of the United States most significant cities. Preservation of buildings from all era should be at the forefront of urban policy IMO, but that’s just my two cents.

It's a nice touch that they kept the name. It was always a bit silly, but it's very memorable.
