Well it's looking more and more likely that a casino will be built in KCK. I for one do not care much for casinos. If done right, they could be a great asset to the community, but once again this is where KC has failed bigtime. They should have built one massive casino entertainment complex near downtown and you could have really seen some different results for many obvious reasons. But instead we have have four that drain the local economy of entertainment dollars and send it out of town. It's no coiencidence (sp) that all of the KC attractions are way down in attendence since the casinos came. And Casinos do not attract out of town visitors cause they are everywhere.
Anyway, KS has a right to try and keep it's tax money from bleeding into MO and the amount of KS people at the casinos is about that of our population split, 35-40 percent are from KS.
OK, there are several big casinos planned for the area around the speedway, the biggest on 600 million (south of I-70) doesn't have much of a chance of being built do to an out of state tribe trying to built it. But a 150 million dollar casino is being proposed for the area north of the casino and it does have a chance.
A couple of thought or questions:
If KCK does build a casino, why not built an awesome first class land based casino similar to something in Las Vegas rather than one of those boring indian casinos on steriods.
Does KC need another big drain on the local entertainment dollar?
Why not in the urban core of KCK like where the riverboats were or even on the KS side of the west bottoms ?
Thoughts?

I haven't seen plans for any casinos yet, so I won't judge whether an Native American-owned facility would be any worse than a corporate facility. NOTHING can compare to any gaming facility in Las Vegas, except for a few Reno/Sparks casinos, a few Atlantic City casinos, and Foxwoods in Connecticut. The riverboats here are quite sad compared to even a locals' casino in Vegas, such as any of the Station properties.
Why the Speedway area? A dynamic has already been established in the area for the agglomeration of "mega-magnets," for lack of a better word. The Speedway area is becoming a redneck power center, and in the eyes of site selection specialists, a casino would probably be a perfect addition to the mix. Hubby can drool over some guns at Cabela's, and the 'ol lady can drop a few hundred into the slots across the street.
I'd be willing to bet that eventually, Bass Pro Outlets ends up by the Speedway. I can't think of any other bigger-than-big-box retailers that hit the "big-ol'-truck-with-a-big-ol'-shiny-bed-box" demographic, though. Maybe a huge pickup dealer mall, or a Giant truck stop.

I would think that the Missouri side of KC would go after Bass Pro since Cabela's is already on the KS side. Why not put a Bass Pro out by the Truman Sports Complex. At least that might build up the area a little more and spur developement that never seemed to occur when the stadiums were first built. This would also be easy for people from out of town to locate, just right off 70 next to the stadiums. If they didn't find what they were looking for, just keep heading west to Cabela's. Sounds simple enough to me.

I think Blue Ridge is a good idea actually. The demographics could use some help, but with Lee's Summit Rd., I-70, I-470, and 40 HWY very near can connect it easily with upper end households in Blue Sprs., Lee's Summit, and Independence. Also the Blue Ridge area is quite simply an eyesore that reminds me of some suburban ghetto of Houston. However, I DO NOT think ANYTHING like Bass Pro should be in Olathe: I think for a lot of poeple in KC, Olathe feels like a wart that is just begging to be accepted as skin.

The wart analogy is priceless. Olathe's fine if you're in your 30s and raising kids.

Exactly when did Olathe ban you from living within one of it's many luxurious trailer courts, trailerkid? What was the offense?

Blue Ridge will be turned into a trinket swap, err flea market, err boutique retail featuring local artisans. Bass Pro has doen extensive studies noting that MOST "lake" traffic travels down 435 to 71 and very little "lake" traffic hits I-70 east bound.
I think demolishing the movie theater on the hill and placing BPS on top would be great. But then again, I don't enjoy eating hard boiled eggs at 10th & Main.

Anyway, they have one in suburban StL and from what I can tell BPS is nothing special. I guess I just don't get the whole BPS/Cable's thing, that stuff bores the hell out of me. Galyan's is cool and I'm pretty sure they are coming to the Northland, off topic.
Blue Ridge is fine and will quickly re-emerge as a neighborhood shopping area. Work will start soon on the Merchandise Mart and it's very likely that a target or something will be built on vacant land to the west. A 16 screen theater will go in at the mall, but they are waiting to hear from BPS. They may want to work the theater into the mall around BPS. The theater on the hill is going to be removed for a hotel.

BTW, I think Olathe has pretty much shook it's image as a hick suburb. Although there are still plenty there and Olathe has some of the trashiest homes for a suburb, the new growth as burried all that.
You will now see cities like Riverside and Belton do the same thing as their reputation go from white trash hicks to middle class suburbanites.
Also, I think there is a posiblity of a Galyan's or other top retail on the east I-470 corridor soon. The is becoming the next upscale retail corridor.

I don't understand why Olathe and Lenexa haven't exploited the tourism potential from John E. Robinson, Jr. He committed terrible crimes, but would showing the Motel 6 rooms where he committed his nasty acts or the trailer park he lived at be any more tacky than the freaky 5 story groundhog or 2 headed steer in Oakley Kansas?
C'mon CVB's quit dropping the ball!

Remember.....Mr Robinson is still set for trial in Missouri where 2 or 3 other bodies were found. This looks like a "bi-state" act to me.Good2Great wrote:I don't understand why Olathe and Lenexa haven't exploited the tourism potential from John E. Btw....when was the last time you checked out one of Olathe's fine cul-de-sacs? 20, 25 years ago?
Times have changed. Come out of your Larryville foxhole and look around.
Olathe's communities are vibrant with the sounds of children playing in our cul-de-sacs.
Can you say as much for the streets that run in between the endless rows of trailer courts in Lawrence?

Whoa! This is getting nasty. I think we'll just have to agree to disagree.
I'll be the first to admit that Lawrence is not in Olathe's league. We have tiny Mass. Street and you have 119th. We have Roy Williams and you have America's sweetheart Kay O'Connor. We have the KU campus and you have the Benchmark campus. You're truly in a class of your own.
By the way, the sound you've been hearing coming from the children in the cul-de-sacs is them screaming. They're bored. Maybe you could volunteer to drive them into the city to get some culture.

What makes you think the children of Olathe are not exposed to "culture" wherever it may be found in the great bi-state region of Kansas City?trailerkid wrote:Whoa! This is getting nasty. I think we'll just have to agree to disagree.

I'll bet my bank account that Olathe's children do, in fact, receive such opportunities. Are you telling me they do not?
RE: Lawrence vs Olathe. Each town is storied. Lawrence is a cool place for many reasons beyond it's latest, greatest import - Ole Roy and his California keeeeids. You may not know that, but don't let being a member of Gen X hold you down. Do your homework.
Likewise with Olathe. Much history is wrapped up in the century old homes, streets and buildings that are "old Olathe". Check it out.
Places that are a part of Johnson and Douglas Counties form a wonderful heritage and historical background. Places like Lawrence, Baldwin City and Olathe are the most notable of these.
I have nothing against Lawrence. And this is my point. Doesn't going off on one or the other's historical or progressive present/future simply for the sake of piling on sound rather ridiculous?
Why the shortcomings of a particular metro area cannot be discussed and spoken of in a positive light by posters (namely those with such impressive, respectable monikers as "trailerkid") is beyond me.
One may despise O'Connor, booming house construction, giant brick and mortar conglomo's and nicely paved, two lane streets, but to drivel on and on about a community being a "wart" is ludicrous.
It begs the question....what is your history with Olathe and JoCo? What or who has given you a real or virtual swirlie or perhaps snuggie that has left you so bitter?

I would "do my homework" to explore, but Olathe hurts my eyes. And as for the children of sacred Olathe, ask some of them outside the Studio 30 what the Nelson is.
Also, read you post again...I'm not the one who is "driveling on."
Can't the exact same be said of St. Joseph?Much history is wrapped up in the century old homes, streets and buildings that are "old Olathe". Check it out.
