Plaza Lighting Ceremony 2005
MUSIC CLICK HERE!
We will begin with a few photos from before they flipped the switch.
And the lights came on.
I've never seen such a line for Starbucks in my life.
After awhile the crowds became lighter.
This guy just insisted that I take his picture, but the car he was in was moving, hence blurriness.

Great work, as always. You can make the Plaza look like London.
I never understood why all the stores aren't open that evening. Should be the biggest nite of sales you can imagine. I've been there about 10 times, and rarely do I see a store open. Such a waste for the local economy!

I have to say the animations are particularly cool. I don't think I've seen GIFs done quite like that before.

Great shots Toss, everybody, I can tell you, Toss spent some time on this thread, editing, cleaning up and even animating these photos. Reply with lots of "wows" and "ahhs"
Toss, could you post or emall me the stats on these? Your fireworks shots look to be 10 seconds or longer with a small aperture opening? Is that right?

Re: Plaza Lighting Ceremony 2005
lol. Thanks GRID and everyone else.
GRID, the first fireworks GIF is only 4 different frames, with I think a shutter opening of four to six seconds per frame, can't quite recall specifics. The second fireworks GIF is either 8 or 10 frames -- can't quite remember, also with a shutter opening of 4 to 5 seconds. Both GIFS flash each frame at 22/100ths of a second, if I recall.

The Plaza is without a doubt one of the better urban environments in the US.

Have they announced roughly what the attendance was this year?

Why of course. As far as I know it's the only way to consistently get decent nighttime photos.bahua wrote: A-ha! A tripod! That's how you got those shots! Now I am very excited about the one i just brought home from Illinois. Good shots.
I don't know, but I am sure that attendance was quite a bit less this year than last. There were noticeably fewer people in the streets. Last year cars couldn't even get through 47th Street because there were throngs of people standing in front of them who wouldn't move. Not the case this year -- traffic still flowed.KansasCityChiefs wrote: Have they announced roughly what the attendance was this year?

By far my favorite. KC needs to do more to embrace it's roots.Tosspot wrote:
PPA, Plaza shops used to be open during the ceremony but never did much business as everyone wanted to be outside. All people came into the shops for was use the restrooms. Plus you kind of have to be a dick to make everyone work on Thanksgiving.

Re: Plaza Lighting Ceremony 2005
Oddly enough I had to wait quite awhilke to get that photo because somebody in a giant Chevy Suburban was sitting in front of the horse carriage for the longest time.
Anyway, similar to PPA's sentiments, I do wish there was more to do after the Ceremony. It was pretty obvious to me that night that after the fireworks show ended, people just start packing up and leaving. Though I do think there are a few restaurants open on the Plaza the night of the Ceremony, one of my wishes for the Plaza would be that it have a few extra bars and/or clubs to stimulate the after-hours activitiy more.

Agreed, Back when I was a "Tosspot" I used to wind up at Blany's or the Levee on Thanksgiving night and Christmas Night.
Open the bars they would do well, the retail can stay closed.
