Food waste. We just "donate" it. And we do our glass recycling at the Ripple bins there.

Meh, I think those renderings look better than 95% of the other postwar condos and apartments in the immediate vicinity.
I still wish someone would start building modern-styled colonades, especially in locations like this (i.e., corner lots and relatively high-profile sites). How sweet would it be to have that basic layout and design continually updated and used as our default infill?

Maybe it's the raised roof that is a turnoff - flat rooftops offer opportunity for rooftop public space. Scores points though for the hidden garages. I'd envision something like Mill Creek Terrace design though as more appropriate for that location, granted these aren't condos.

The Founders at Union Hill did a bit of this, but it's surprising no one has really tried to recreate a modern colonnade. The closest thing are the modern versions of classic KC shirtwaists and bunglows in some of the New Urbanist developments like New Longview and Shoal Creek.

Owners hope to make Beacon Tavern a neighborly place
The new Beacon Tavern is more neighborhood than most. Not only are most of the 15 partners in the business native to the South Plaza neighborhood — in some cases the second, third or even fourth generation to live there — they plan to make the bar and restaurant a draw for area friends, families and others, including residents of a planned apartment complex across the street.
The Beacon opened last week in the former Jack Gage space at 5031 Main St.

The development schedule calls for construction to begin this fall with completion expected in mid-2014.

That devel at 51st and Main looks awesome BUT WHERE WILL EVERYONE PARK? Did you see that comment? Someone is claiming in the comments that since there is, in their opinion, not enough parking, everyone will move away and historic buildings will be torn down...

Is this not the perfect style of development for the area (and most of KC)? Not only ground floor retail and offices, but a garage in the center, a style of development I've always thought would be a great fit for KC.

Beacon Tavern needs to focus on being a neighborhood place than a Plaza extension like Jack Gage tried. JG felt like it tried too hard to reach beyond the hood.
BTW, ate at Cafe Europa bar the other day (55th/Bside) and was completely impressed. A true neighborhood dining place that can compete with James Beard category places but does not try too hard. It targets the hood rather than trying to be a destination and it works.
