Ahh good to see Sears continue their track record of sensible corporate decision making.  ](*,)

It would make business sense for Sears (Kmart) to halt the construction. With the building that sears owns right at the south end of the development I would not think that they would want to make a new weatherproof wall on the north side of their current store. And the construction will hurt business. With Sears putting out garden tractors on the west side of the building, Loading them into customers trucks will be hampered. the customers want an almost straight shot out to the north after getting a load this size.

For Metcalf south to attract business in the long run would be to do a thourogh cleaning of the whole building to make it fresh again.

Yes construction will be a pain in the ass - but as it is now they get zero traffic from neighboring businesses.  The only customers that wind up at the Sears are people who came to go to the Sears.  If the project happens, there will be untold numbers of additional people just passing by their door.

Cleanliness isn't the problem - the vacant space is in remarkably immaculate condition - its just dated and deserted.

You could have a line of people ringing that Sears, all with their pants down, taking a shit, and it wouldn't hurt business a bit. Sears has its niche, and the people who shop there will continue to shop there even if it's in the middle of a construction zone.

The last time I was in Metcalf South mall it smelled so much like mold especialy in the lower level. This is a very serious red flag to any merchant that wants to locate there.

In this weeks Biz Journal:  MD Management ready to move ahead with redevelopment of Metro North and Metcalf South.  They project that they are 2 years away from starting construction.  Alberta Development of Denver not to be involved.  Construction to take two years.  East Hills in St. Joe was viewed as a trial run.  Mall to be retained or reconstructed between Sears and Macy's with multi-story mixed use along Metcalf.  Project will include Glenwood Mall development north across 95th.

I will believe it when I see it.  It will still be an untouched dead mall two years from now.

On a side note, about 3 weeks ago when it was cold and sleety, I took the kids to the mall to blow some steam.  They are 12mo and 2.5 years old.  It was fun to let em run around.  The fountains are fun to look at and the multi-story overlooks were fun for them.  They also had a pet adoption center in one of the mall spaces, so the kids could see the kitty-cats.  We just had to watch out for mall-walkers (nice folks and not very fast movers).

It was a bit weird to walk all around the place….something I have not done in close to 20 years.  Felt like a museum to 1980s retails storefronts.

Back in the late ‘70s and 80s, I went there all the time with my mom, looking for school clothes.  We either went to Metcalf South, Oak Park, or the Missing Shopping Center (before torn down to built the Mission Mall) for clothes.  The mall stores were the same between Oak Park and Metcalf South, just depended if Mom wanted to go to Jones/Sears or Penny’s/Macy’s/Dillards/Stix, Bear & Fuller.

And when I was in high school (late ‘80s), we often went to Metcalf South for date nights at the movie theater.  It was either there, Oak Park Mall/Plaza, Glenwood or sometimes Ranchmart or Trailridge.  Glenwood was great is your movie was in the big house with the rockers, but I preferred the two mall locations because you knew you would see your friends in the mall before the movie.
