Figured the posts about this tragedy made more sense to have in its own topic - instead of the Go Chiefs Forum, Dev Q&A Forum, etc

The update today is that the 2 juveniles held were officially charged. TBD on if they will be tried as adults.
A news release from the Jackson County Family Court said the juveniles were charged Thursday and are being detained in the county's Juvenile Detention Center "on gun-related and resisting arrest charges." The release said it is "anticipated that additional charges are expected in the future as the investigation by the Kansas City Police Department continues."
On a different note, A GoFund Me created for the woman who passed away and her family has raised nearly $300k as of 2pm Feb 16th. Helped of course by Taylor Swift donating $100,000

Yeah... fair point. This thread will probably go the way of the Gun violence near T-Mobile Center thread.

Just wanted to give it a dedicated space away from some of the other threads that were created for other discussions

Will any possible future victory celebration occur only inside secure Arrowhead ? Hate that we are having to think about retreating to fortresses.

Mayor Lucas said today that the St. Patrick's Day parade will continue as planned.

Mayor already has stated that St. Patrick’s day parade is still going ahead as planned. Unless the Chiefs or NFL decide that security would be better for the Brand, I doubt that’s abandon the Parades in favor of a stadium celebration.

and the shooting wasn't along the parade route but after the rally, I was still concerned about some Qanon nut shooting #87 along the parade route

how hard would it be to be add checkpoints along the route and near the stage for another celebration? could they just have a long parade route on the way from NKC to Arrowhead for a rally?

Far too difficult to implement security checkpoints when an event is drawing hundreds of thousands over a mile+ of area. To be a truly secure event, you’d need to vacate all buildings during these events on the parade route. We shouldn’t lock ourselves up and away because of this tragedy. We can come together and move on, but if we want a secure environment for large events like this, it has to go far beyond reason and get extremely difficult to implement adequately.

to have something truly secure would mean staying holed up like the early days of the pandemic?

No because that was a health issue with the issue of staying home thrown onto the public by a clueless government. And it didn’t work very well either. Infections still skyrocketed, homicides spiked because more victims were sitting ducks rather than being on the move, and (unless you were in California, New York, Europe, and Asia) it was entirely voluntary to stay home with no heavy hand of the government to step in and say otherwise. The two aren’t comparable.

So… no checkpoints for victory parades and other large events (super rare) like this. As I said, it would be far too difficult to implement.

Agreed. Plus Lucas already was already asked this question and said it's a non-starter. This wasn't a terrorist incident, but if it was and there were secure areas, someone would simply stand outside the security areas and fire into them.

This is exactly right. You could do something like what the NFL did for the draft but that was a relatively small area and event in comparison. A parade route would be almost impossible to secure and with that number of people trying to pass through a limited number of checkpoints, it would have been almost impossible. Plus who is to say that the altercation that started the shooting would not have happened in the checkpoint line.

The shooters were not trying to kill people, just each other, it could have happened anywhere on the way to the event or on the way out, there were plenty of potential innocent bystanders everywhere.

I've watched this discussion evolve on the national sporting talk shows with some pundits suggesting this would be the last open air parade for super bowl champions and that the NFL would push teams to have them in stadiums with far fewer people in the future. I hope it doesn't come to that.

these things could also occur in the parking lots on gamedays were they don't inspect cars coming into the parking lot

A different era. Mass shootings had not become so commonplace and were not the subject of an intense national discussion in 1993.

Who knows? It hasn't come to that yet and hopefully never will. But I do remember the security around the NFL draft being what I felt at the time was a little over the top. That's the NFL, they are very risk averse. Can they dictate how a city celebrates after a championship?

they had much longer to plan for the draft, and how would business owners feel if they shut down streets the week before a parade that might not be needed? also some anti-vax Qanon nut could have taken a shot at #87 along the parade route
