So, Reddit is imposing prohibitive fees to access their free API. Because this API is free, a massive ecosystem of excellent independent apps exists today, a herd of apps that Reddit itself joined a decade into the site's popularity with a crummy, unstable app that's light on features and poorly designed.

Because of these impending changes, many of these apps' developers have said they're going dark at the end of this month. Thousands of subreddits will lose their moderators, and millions of users will disappear.

I wasn't overly put off by Musk's incompetent destruction of Twitter, because the platform had been intentionally toxic for years by then. But the loss of Reddit is extremely impactful to me.

How about you? Thoughts?

With the self-inflicted death of these critical platforms, It seems like we may be headed back to a more decentralized Internet, like we had until the mid-2000s, when sites like the kcrag forum were far more relevant than they are today.

I'm fine with Reddit going under. Like Twitter, Reddit has its fair share of toxic users that take away from the experience of it. I'll admit that I looked through different subreddits and even posted on there, but I felt like its usefulness was incredibly limited. Whereas a forum, like KCRag or UrbanSTL, is a bit of a better community for our interests where spirited discussions can be had that can occasionally spill over into having a beer with fellow users. That's more of a case on social media sites like this instead of Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, etc.

The idea of a decentralized internet with a million small players is actually extremely exciting to me. Do you think this community would use a mastodon instance devoted to it?

I have been thinking about ways to integrate it with the forum. Like maybe a voting system that promotes good forum posts into public mastodon posts.

Have you looked at LemmyBB? It's the message board for the Fediverse and has the same design as phpBB. Can post to/from Mastodon.

I was looking at that and kbin, but I haven't jumped into them yet, as I am a bit put off by how expensive it is to run mastodon. I run my own instance, and with almost zero user activity, it's still very active on the server, just to sync data from other servers. I'm a little suspicious about software that needs that much horsepower just the bare minimum. I assume it will get better with time though.

Twitter/X, like Reddit, will continue being a massively used social media platform despite the rise of copycats. When others require you to have a code to join and others are tailored to folks of specific political leanings, most will just stick to the existing. They're familiar, people know how to use them, and usage remains high.
