Wasn't boulevard and somr other known restaurant / bar supposed to be putting elements in here?

Either way sounds like some fun things, hopefully figure out how to make it less hostile to walk to

However, this month, the first phase of the development is set to open. That includes a mini golf course, refreshments stand and the ferris wheel, which developers are calling an observation wheel.

Next door, in the former Pennway Oil Building, there will be Barrel Hall, a 6,000-square-foot space that will house several food and drink spots including Boulevard Brewery’s Barrel-Aged Tasting Bar, Austrian sausage grill restaurant Würstl and the Bull Creek Whisky Bar. In The Smoke Shack, a wood-timbered canopy constructed from 100-year old reclaimed timber that will be attached to Barrel Hall, customers can witness Chef J BBQ’s live working smokehouse and grab a bite to eat.

Downtown development delays opening of giant Ferris wheel off I-35
The KC Wheel at Pennway Point won’t open in November as previously anticipated, but developers say they are in the final stages of construction.

Maryland-based developer ICON Experiences now hopes Kansas City’s new Ferris wheel will open sometime in early or mid-December and be operating in time for Christmas.

This is a very ambitious project. I sure hope they can pull it off.

Agree. If it is as family friendly as it seems I think it will be a huge success. There are almost no options for people with kids in the city to go hang out and have drinks/entertainment and drag along the kids. Huge market hole that other cities address much better

Key to success is connecting it to Union Station & Crown Center, one big family thing in the city that everyone is cool with. Wonder if they could build more pathways or a connector electric bus by the railroad tracks behind both US & PP.

I feel like Pershing is overdue for a redesign. It is built as an expressway, but handles minimal traffic. You could take half its width and turn it into a linear park connecting Broadway to Gillham.

If Union Station was willing to give up the parking fronting the building, they could extend Washington Park further West.

^An exchange of US parking for bundled tickets for US Event/Ferris Wheel with whatever agreement mutually beneficial for both is something they could pursue. With perhaps carts for less able that run connecting the two available to those who have cross-site bundled tickets. The carts can run behind US under the overpass between properties and avoid the roads. Could also add some kind of rail based theme but still industro-raw walk between sites or at least perk up the path in some form appropriately in context.

Widen sidewalks on both sides of Pershing, add street trees.

Massive crosswalks with islands on both crossings of Broadway.

Enter thru Carter/Waters building take elevator/escalator down to fun.

Tourists will walk there guaranteed.

Isn't one of the guys behind this a big proponent of the Greenline around the downtown area? I fully expect some push for a path along the RR

It's an 8 minute walk from the union station garage to the wheel. Probably not the most pleasant walk, but that could be improved.

I would agree with what Earthling has drawn. Clean up that corridor along the RR tracks and then you have a nice direct connection from the garage to the north side of the Pennway district with a walk of under 5 minutes.

Still need to do something with Pershing though to make the walk more enjoyable and safe from the main part of Union Station and Crown Center.

And tear down the IRS monstrosity that is barely used and will be used less and less every year going forward (who files paper taxes?) and put the new Royals stadium there. 8)

Correct.

What earthling drew isn’t too far off from the idea.

Connection to the Haverty bridge plays into this being a spur/trailhead of the south leg of the Greenline

Yeah Greenline is key. The Pershing path will never be pleasant. Focus on greenline for the connection point for peds.

Shouldn't give up on Pershing, it's the center of gravity for people visiting KC, between Crown Center, Liberty Memorial and Union Station.

Should definitely be an urban pedestrian plaza, but would settle for a nice boulevard.

Urban Lab is still working in the background on a refined vision for an improved Pershing, it’s been on the back burner for a bit as other projects have taken priority, but it’s still going. Once it’s ready for public release I’ll toss some details on here as well.

Pershing could use widened sidewalks and street trees to improve pedestrian experience. With its monumental architecture Pershing is the closest thing we have to an European style boulevard and provides a great contrast to the narrow dark downtown streets.

That parking lot in front of US is the dumbest parking lot in the city. It's as bad as if they tore out the front of City Hall and put in a surface lot. But people will make every stupid excuse in the world to keep it. The Block fountain should have went there where pedestrians can actually enjoy it, making the front yard of Union Station a grand plaza. Instead the entire front of US is a totally car-centric cesspool.[rendering of US's parking lot in front of KC City Hall] https://link.shutterfly.com/LVj0uK6MtFb
