Cathedral Pursuing $14M Campaign for New Parish Center, Homeless Facility

Image
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, a landmark church that pre-dates downtown, has launched a $14 million campaign to build a new parish hall and renovate space for its breakfast program for the homeless.
...
The “Building Glory” campaign is intended to fund the renovation of the existing rectory building located on 12th Street into a new home for Morning Glory. The program provides social services and a full breakfast to more than 100 homeless people six days a week.

“This purpose-built facility will accommodate all the current services and planned expansions of the mission to help this needy population for decades to come,” according to the Building Glory website.
...
The plan also calls for the demolition of the existing Donnelly Hall and its replacement with a New Donnelly Hall connected to the Cathedral that will include an event space for 300- to 400 people, a welcome center and gift shop.

The two-story 13,000 square foot building will also house parish offices, meeting rooms, a reception area, a bridal room, a catered kitchen and additional storage, according to the Building Glory website.
...
The architect is SFS Architecture and the contractor will be J.E. Dunn Construction.

Very attractive renderings.

I wish the near 20-year old renovation of the interior of the cathedral had gone full traditional in undoing the first wreckovation.

I wish some rich Catholic donor would eventually help fund/finance a second senior residential tower on that parking lot that will be fronting Broadway and 12th Street.

Not an impossibility. Certainly would be a market for it. I think ultimately a project for residential involving parking within it, after the lot being sold by the diocese, is likelier.

Cathedral revamps plans after feedback from the community. Will raze existing buildings for the project and in the process provide more parking

I did a screen snip from Google Earth with 3D buildings turned on to show the present layout of that area. I tried to use the same rough POV as the original plan's aerial rendering. The new building may improve the street wall along 11th, but a 2 story building is still pretty anemic. The corner parking lot won't be pretty and with the old buildings demolished it will really flip the bird to both Broadway and 12th. Although this plan is filed as a cathedral "expansion", it looks like it will be a net reduction in terms of built, non-parking surface area. Also the revised plan will demo that smaller building on the back left facing 12th in favor of yet more parking, so the planned parking area will be even slightly larger than the first proposal.

The rectory on 12th to be demolished? Irony of new homeless outreach making priests homeless.

Status on February 25th. Since then, they've put the cream color brick onto the building.
