Average joe restaurants...any?

Looking for bare bones, average, but solid place that does it right. Not into the "craft" scene. I'm getting too old for experiments. I make to the city on weekends every now and then but I always spend most of the time driving around and heading back home (same old, same old). Seems like nothing has really changed. Not into Kansas so i'm looking midtown or east.

Not exactly the direction you were looking for, but you could check out some of the stuff in the West Bottoms. The Lunch Box, Lucky Boys and Rockstar Burgers (I know... it's weird - but it's a 24/7 diner) are all pretty bare bones and average.

Both Mad jack's Catfish or Niecie's on Troost around 63rd are both pretty straight forward.

Haven't been to Niecie's in that location, the one on 63rd closed. Not really a fan of the burger unless it's ground in house. Any good southern diners in the area? Like something you would find in OK, TX or GA. I haven't been to Portia's or Dagwoods in a awhile. Looking for places like waid's, the old Pat's pig etc.

Not familiar with any of your comparables, but here are a couple ideas:

Lutfi's at either 31st & Main or on 63rd is good fish and southern sides. No booze, though.

Harry's Country Club in River Market has good American comfort food. Has booze.

Corner Cafe in Riverside. Also have locations in Indep off I-70 and Liberty

You can buy chicken gizzards (or is it chicken livers?) seven days a week, that's the kind of place they are.

I'm confused....You want a new place that does average level food? Like meh this isn't that great....Or are you just looking for home cooking.

Go to homesteader....It's meh and homecoming type.

Woodswether would have fit the bill, but they've closed. Haven't been to the current place there.

I haven't seen that WW space in the West Bottoms consistently open yet. Not sure what the story is.

if you liked the food at Jerry's Woodswether Cafe in the Bottoms, I think most of it can be had at Jerry's Cafe in Watts Mill.

Good to know! They had pretty stellar pork tenderloin sandwiches.

If Peculiar isn't too far out the Peculiar Drive In is very well liked in this area. They will even do a custom made burger for you. The pork tenderloins are to be top tier. Missouri Mud coffee shop in Raymore for breakfast and lunch is also very well liked.

Not really new or old restaurants. I think i'm kind of looking for a restaurant like the Howard Johnsons were back in the 60's

Portia's, Cascone's on 5th, Mixing Bowl Noshery, The Diner at 3rd & Grand, West Bottoms Kitchen, Corner Cafe' in Riverside, Kate's Kitchen in Gladstone, JJ's Homestead, Morningday Cafe or Ginger Sue's....all in Liberty.

Counter service and simple cafe-style meal offerings are growing rare in the city.

Oh yeah, I didn't think of Mixing Bowl but that's a pretty good suggestion.
