St Louis Rising

The discussion and participation is not at the level of this site, but, it does feature a few passionate posters that like to take pictures of STL City and County buildings. They even discuss future building projects and stuff. Kinda cool if you are interested in what's going on in The Lou.

We talk quite a bit about KCMO businesses relocating in suburbia. Here is a situation that appears may come full circle in STL (be sure to read the last paragraph below):
===============================================
The St. Louis region already has Riddell Footwear, Rawlings, Wenzel (Kellwood), Markwort Sporting Goods, Hilton Casuals (K-2 Inc.), and now Worth, Inc. (K2 Inc.).

It appears that St. Louis is becoming a force in the sports equipment/apparel industry.

K2 combines sales teams at Rawlings headquarters

Rawlings Sporting Goods Co.'s Fenton headquarters is undergoing a bit of a shakeup with the arrival of several executives and managers from its former competitor, Worth Inc.

California-based K2 Inc., best known for its in-line skates and snow skis, acquired both Rawlings and Worth last year in separate transactions and is moving key positions with Worth to Rawlings' St. Louis office.

Both Rawlings and Worth will continue to operate as separate brands but will share some efficiencies, such as combining their retail sales teams and merging Worth's Bag and Glove division with Rawlings.

Last September, K2 appointed Robert Parish president of Rawlings following the resignation of outgoing Chairman and Chief Executive Stephen O'Hara. Prior to his new title, Parish had served as president and chief executive of Worth since 1995.

Parish said it is too early to say how many employees from Worth will make the move to St. Louis, but for now it involves a half-dozen of the company's top sales and marketing directors, with several more moves expected. Worth, which employs between 250 and 280 people at its administrative office and manufacturing plant in rural Tullahoma, Tenn., will continue to produce its softball and baseball bats at that location.

Dudley Mendenhall, a K2 spokesman, said the change in executive management will result in headcount reductions at both Worth and Rawlings, but the St. Louis office of Rawlings will experience a net gain in employees with the addition of Worth employees. Rawlings employs approximately 120 people at its Fenton office.

Mendenhall said the parent company chose St. Louis as the hub for its baseball and softball division, because with sales of $173.7 million in fiscal 2002, Rawlings is by far the larger of the two companies. Worth had sales of $57.8 million in 2002.

Worth's athletic duffel-bag and glove operations will integrate with those of Rawlings, which is best known for its baseball and softball gloves. Meanwhile, Rawlings will benefit from Worth's technology in producing aluminum and composite bats.

Parish said the transfer of Worth employees to Rawlings' headquarters will necessitate a larger office building. Rawlings recently signed a one-year extension to the lease agreement at its 27,000-square-foot headquarters in Fenton. K2 has said Rawlings will continue to remain in St. Louis, and last April the Business Journal reported the company was considering a move back to downtown St. Louis, where it had been headquartered prior to moving to the suburbs in the late 1980s.
