I really doubt KC is alone with that either.

In KC we just haven't written these kind of things into the building code yet.

Like the Plaza bowl and Kauffman view are just guidelines. versus DC which saw its building height max through a law back in 1910

I would say KC, and smaller midwestern cities in general, do in fact have a higher incidence of NIMBYism than metros that are either significantly larger, have a much higher transplant population, or have a significant amount of foreign investment. Or all three. In other words, places where growth (population, income, job) and its physical manifestation occurs at a higher rate.

Downtown Austin, Minneapolis, Seattle, San Diego, Uptown Dallas, etc. etc. have thrown up an entire Omaha skyline's worth of buildings over the past decade and for the most part are celebrated as vibrant, if expensive, neighborhoods. Traffic is a universal complaint, and quickly rising rents on the west coast, but the projects are still built at a nearly unstoppable pace.

i actually don't blame them* since we've literally given most residents no choice in the matter. ergo, mass transit.

(*i do blame them, i just try to change the narrative in a constructive way)

The majority of Charlotte's population moved there over the past couple of decades and probably aren't as concerned about 'progress' as the native population.

Good question.
I've found myself in the NIMBY category lately regarding the Woodside development on Rainbow.
Any particular thing you don't want in your backyard, JBMidtown? Let's hear some specifics!

Anyone who disagrees with a proposal near them may be considered a NIMBY - nothing wrong with that. It would be very strange if _no one_ disagreed with a proposal/project in their area that impacts the current state - especially if people are satisfied with current state.

This is an example of KC-specific NIMBYism, futureshock, tradtionalism.
The upholsterer's disdain for fiber-optics is metaphorical GOLD.

I think the perceived NIMBYism around here is a function of the overall "KC sucks so bad, why can't we be like every other city" attitude that is, frankly, pretty annoying around here.

When you take a close look at any city, you will find examples like this. The Spring Valley article is a perfect example. One guy has a NIMBY issue and the entire forum missses the overall positive of high-tech change going on around google fiber.

By the way, a cursory search for "NIMBY" on the Charlotte City-Data forum yields PLENTY of results.

But anymore, with all these techies coming and going, she said, “we don’t know who’s not supposed to be here.”
Who the hell are you to decide who is or isn't supposed to be anywhere? People who talk like this drive me completely insane. I suspect this is the type of person who obsessively watches crime dramas on TV while keeping an eye out the window to make sure she can identify every person in every car that drives by her house. For crying out loud, lady, it's a city, not Mayberry.

any particular thing? Well, anything that mgsports gets excited about.

I live off of Troost, so I would take anything that didn't involve tearing down the beautiful and tragically underutilized retail/apartments between 31st and 43rd.

What's wrong with Woodside?
Would you rather YFC was still there?

What is YFC?

Oh, youthfront- well, no and this is a false choice. ...nice to see that one year later and my presumptions were correct. My NIMBYISM has borne fruit- the first phase of the Woodside expansion has made a shitshow out of Rainbow from 46th to 47th. There's two stoplights within a block and the 200+ residents and their dogs and cars have yet to even arrive. Sometimes NIMBYs are sharing actual wisdom.
