Check the price of a 6 foot tree! In Phoenix they're called cactus rustlers.

Also this was probably during the Depression.

Trees that provide a canopy over city streets also reduce the neighborhood temperature since asphalt absorbs and retains heat.

City just planted a "hot wings" maple in front of my house. Anyone have any experience with this variety?

Re: Trees in KC (ongoing)
Thanks for the info. I have a worry that this tree may become an invasive mistake like the callery pears

No need to worry. This species is well tested. Sure, you might see a couple seedlings pop up, but they will be rare. The similar Amur Maple is far worse at re-seeding itself.

Crossroads adding trees.
A (Shade) Tree Grows in Crossroads
The Crossroads really needs to get on the ball and get Grand Boulevard well-planted.
Does the streetcar preclude ever having street trees on Main?
A (Shade) Tree Grows in Crossroads
https://cityscenekc.com/a-shade-tree-gr ... -CR4iTwzrIThe Crossroads Community Association wants to grow its way out of being downtown’s hottest neighborhood–literally–by planting dozens of street trees to provide more shade.
...
This week, 11 trees were planted throughout the neighborhood in the first phase. Johnson said there’s a total of 50 wells needing new trees and the plan calls for replanting them all before expanding to new locations.
...
A 2018 Urban Forest Master Plan by the city parks department found only 1.2 percent of the Crossroads neighborhood was sheltered by a tree canopy as opposed to 2.5 percent in the Central Business District, according to the CCA.
That compares with city neighborhoods such as Crestwood where 60 percent benefits from a tree canopy.
Without the shade of trees, parking lots and other paved surfaces absorb heat and create heat islands that can make the temperature feel hotter.
...
The replanting effort is being privately funded, although the Streetcar Authority is paying to replace the trees removed during construction of the downtown streetcar line.
The CCA also is working to fund future tree-planting phases with multiple sources, including the city’s RebuidKC grant program, according a press release.

There’s an approved list of trees that can be planted along the streetcar. The ones planted last week (European Hornbeams) are on it because they don’t have a large crown).

Right now I am back to feeling that KC gov can't do anything right. Last fall they planted over 100 trees of many varieties along Paseo from 27th to Linwood. Expertly planted with mulch, watering crater, steel fence posts with cable supports and plastic water bladders. Dry winter, mostly dry spring, now devastating heat still no rain. All this time no watering crews attending, despite my calling 311 twice. Most of the trees now turning brown and crispy. What a waste of money. Plant fewer trees and then use the extra funds to budget watering crews. A boulevard lined with dead trees is worse than no trees.

Call the TV stations. Planting trees just to let them die is a good story.

Central KC. Ask any gardener. Very erratic rainfall pattern.

Many times this spring I thought we were getting rain and it's gone just north or south of us. One time east.

Purely anecdotal, but it really seems like we are losing a lot of trees/limbs with every storm this year.
